Am I the only one that can't stand psych nursing? :uhoh3: I absolutely cannot stand it. I don't know which is worse - the patients or the instructors! I want to get back to med/surg so badly...lol.

ROFL I was the EXACT opposite - hated Med-Surg and LOVED psych! :chuckle

I'll be starting psych in the fall. At first I wasn't really looking forward to it....but now after reading your post--I'm even more terrified. Our instructors tell us that fall will be one of our most difficult semesters in the program.

I hated it too! The instructors were freaks. I've had many a nurse say that to work in psych nursing, you've got to be a little nuts yourself, lol.

Exactly - I feel like our instructors are playing mind games with us when it comes to the tests. And all of these disorders - they are all starting to sound the same to me. They all seem to have hallucinations, delusions, social anxiety, etc. My exam on Tuesday is covering Schizophrenia & all of the other forms of schizo (schizoaffective, schizophreniform, etx), all of the spectrum disorders, all of the personality disorders & dementia/Alzheimer's & delirium. I can handle the nursing care, because a lot of the interventions are generally the same - give them space, try to reorient but also realize that what they are experiencing is real to them, all of the different antipsychotic, antidepressive, benzodiazepines, antianxiety, stimlants drugs, etc. & their potential side effects. However, our fun instructors take it a step further & want us to know what neurotransmitters are affected, what lobe of the brain is affected, if it is genetic - what genes are involved. Helloooooo...we are in nursing school, not neurology 101.

I had read somewhere that if you were not looking forward to the psych semester, that you end up really enjoying it & vice versa - if you were looking forward to it, you end up disliking it. Well, I'm here to prove that myth wrong. I wasn't looking forward to it & I can't stand it...lol.

Two more weeks until this nightmare is over. No one ever warned us about this class...lol. Now that I've thought about it, the instructors are far worse than the patients! At least the patients are interesting. :)

I think they schedule it right before our final semester so that we can't wait to get back to med/surg - even if it is advanced. Good luck to those that have not yet taken psych!!!!!! :rotfl:

LOL I'll prove it wrong with you! I knew before I started my professional component that I'd love it, and I adore it! Of course, I'm the only person in my class who likes psych nursing, and I plan on being a psych nurse! LOL

I like the med/surg stuff alright, but I'm JUST crazy enough to love psych! :p

At my school we had psych first semester of our junior year. about 16 students did not pass (out of about 95) people hated it or tolerated it. i tolerated it. so many of the test questions seemed common sense to me, unless they were related to a particular theory. to succeed in psych, you must know eric erikson. and do the reading. best of luck:)
