Pre-Reqs question

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I am really new to this, I haven't even started school yet...I am waiting on the date I have to take the ASSET test. If I have never been to college, besides the required Pre-reqs for the Nursing Program at my community college, which are English, Pyschology and Biology, what other pre-req's can I expect to have to take?? I know I will have to take Math, because I am not too good at it, but the reading and writing part I do pretty good on. Does anyone have any idea??? I am trying to be prepared to apply for the Nursing Program in the Fall of 2005 and I am wondering how likely that is to happen? :uhoh21: I am currently in the working world and I am 36. I don't know if that makes a difference or not but just wanted to my status to be known.

Thanks for any input,

Kathy

I'd say 2 english, one math, chemistry, sociology, 2 psychology, microbiology and A&P.

I am referring to pre-reqs to start the Nursing Program. The others you named are part of the program and not required before you begin, except the ones I mentioned.

Well pretty much all schools function on a different system. The best thing would be to contact someone in the nursing department of the school you are applying at and see what kind of advice they give you. All but one of the nursing programs I have been looking into require you to have your A&P, biology, chemistry, etc. before you can be accepted into the program.

we need algebra and chemistry before we can apply to the program. We also need our CNA before starting the program.

Wow I guess it is really different everywhere. I take the ASSET test next Friday so I will find out, I guess I was just wondering if anyone knew but since it is different everywhere, no one can really answer my question. But I do appreciate your responses very much!!

Sometimes you need a humanities class too in your general studies requirements.

fo my school you have to complete 1 semester of human biology and lab the 3 semester of anatomy and physiology, 1 semester of chemistry (if you place high enough on the asset test to go straight in if not you have to take an intro class or 2) english 101. all before the 1st semester of nursing. before 2 yr of nursing microbiology engl 102 psych 211 and speech 211 and nutrition must be complete. because the advisors don't advise nursing students to take other classes while they are in the program most try to get as many of these done before starting the program. to graduate with associate in applied science you also need humanites, p.e., credits. for and additional AA you need a 100 level math course, more pysch, speech, fine arts, more humanities etc. and if you are looking to transfer to a bsn after graduation then you need 2 semesters of statistics another semester of chemistry and the other gen ed courses. it really differs from school to school so check with your school of choice and talk to an advisor.
