PDA's

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi everyone,

I am starting nursing school in January and I was wondering how many students use PDA's. I asked Santa for one but I wanted to see how popular they were on this board. Do you find that you use the PDA all the time or is it something that sits in the drawer (SP?) I know some students use them for pharmacology but what else do you use them for?

Anyway, just curious to see how new students use technology to help them in their studies.

I haven't looked into it yet, but I wonder if applications must first fill up the onboard memory before 'spilling over' onto the card? I'm going to look into it further when I have a chance, because I'll have the same problem when I get ready to install the Taber's. I also have Epocrates on my M505 main memory, and will want to move it.

I don't know for sure but I thought the M130 had a limitation of 128Mb on the expansion card. Is the Palm seeing the memory card?

If so, check this. When you start your install tool there should be a button under the window where the application is listed that says "Change Destination". You should be able to select the Epocrates application and click this button to have the app installed on your memory card.

If it isn't there look and let me know what version of Palm Desktop you are running. I'll see what I can find for you.

The Palm sees the memory card and in fact, I have switched many of my programs over to it by using the copy function on the PDA itself. I will try what you suggest and see if that works. Thanks!

Does anybody feel like a complete dork pulling out their keyboard in class and typing away, or this becoming a mainstream thing (not that I have to run with the crowd, cuz I don't!!! Just wondering). My husband started laughing at me when I told him my plan to take notes during lectures by typing using my palm. He thinks it's distracting to others when people do that during meetings at his workplace. Are there other people using laptops, and so on during your lectures?

I don't have a PDA, but I do have a laptop, just because I didn't want to hassle with a lot of the stuff that's been mentioned on this thread.

But I think I'm the only one in my school that types notes.

At first, everybody asked me about it so, it was kinda uncomfortable to be the only one. But as soon as the lecture started, I was so glad because I'm a really fast typist.

I don't like to tape lectures because it's too time consuming to transcribe them. And I hate handwritten notes because you can't find the stuff you need easily.

With the laptop I pull up notes or relevant search terms very easily. I couldn't live without it.

BTW, I don't think it's distracting if your keyboard hardly makes any noise. Mine is very quiet, but some keyboards are much noisier than others.

Merry Christmas Everyone

I got my PDA. It is very nice, I love it already. Hubby bought me a Palm Tungsten C and I just think it great.

I already downloaded epocrates and I am looking forward to learning how to use this thing. It is like a mini laptop, I kid you not, this thing does everything. Love the WI FI too.

Now I can try some of the links that some of you recommended.

Mona,

I don't know how it will work out for Nursing but I've been pleased with my Tungsten C up to this point. I don't know about Epocrates but I like Skyscape's applications. They have Tabers and Davis' Drug Guide in addition to others. The link to their site is http://www.skyscape.com

I would like to download the Tabers, but my palm does not have enough memory, and I do not understand how to use the memory cards.

Any thoughts on the Tungsten E? I just got it for Christmas and dont know much about the PDA's. So far I have used the organizer portion and thats about it. Just wondering if I may have to buy more memory for some of the larger medical programs that I will need. Any pros and cons with this model?

If you are using a Palm you pretty much just have to buy the memory card (should be a secure digital card) and slide it into the device. They are relatively inexpensive. I think a 64 Mb card would run no more that $30. Unless you are putting your whole nursing library on one, that would work for you.

I don't know about other vendors but the one I recommended - Skyscape - defaults to install on a memory card during Hotsync. It should be pretty seamless.

Okay, about the Tungsten E, in my opinion it is a great starter PDA. It's slim, lightweight, and has awesome color. It is not the fastest processor out there in a handheld but it is more than enough to run beginning (and nursing) apps that you would want on it. I can think of no real negatives about it. Palm has been doing organizers for a while - they have it down to an art. I'm almost positive you'll be happy with it.

I think it only comes with 32 Mb of memory so most likely you will need to pick up at least a 64Mb card, too. I haven't priced any of the secure digital cards in a while so it may be easier and cheaper just to get a 128 Mb one. I just throw that size out there because it works perfectly for me. It doubles my available storage room.

Anyway, when you go shopping get all you can for the money. Since you're Palm will play music too you may want to throw some tunes on it to listen to while you're in class!!

I purchased a Handspring Visor Pro with 16mb memory last year and have gotten a lot of use out of it. It's with me all the time, just like my car keys! I also have the keyboard which has been a big help whenever we had to copy stuff off the screen while the teacher is changeing pages. It has doucumets to go, and will syncronize with my pc. It keeps all my appointments, phone #, and addresses, things I need to remember, all my kids friends phone #, my grades, and anything else I may need to remember. I also purchased Tabors and downloaded it on it. Works great. This particular model was the best buy for me at the time, since it was on sale, and rated pretty good. What I didn't know was that it is no longer being made. bummer! It does not have color, which I think would be heck of alot easier to read, and is rechargeable, which I like.

I think my next one would need to be color, and have memory that you can add, plus it needs to be folding keyboard compatable. I'm learning what I need and would like to have, now if I can only find it for the right price.

I must say, I envy the lady that can type fast enough to take note in class! My typing is slow and methodical, but at least I can read it, which is more then I can say for my writting when I'm taking notes.

I have a tungsten E and have been using it without a memory card until Christmas whe I got a memory card from my santa!!!

Without the memory card I was able to download PEPID, and the full Epocrates RX pro. I also have photos saved on it and my entire 128 name address book. So what I am saying is, without a memory card this little jem holds a great deal. I mainly wanted the memory card so that as my schooling goes on, I will be sure to have enough memory.

This is my second Palm PDA and I only know of one negative which may or may not be an issue with the newer PDAs in general. It is the battery. My tungsten E has a built in recharageable battery. Now I don't know this next fact first hand but the salesman at Best Buy told me the recharageable batteries are built onto the motherboard so in the event the battery goes bad, I will have to send the entire PDA to the manufacturer to be repaired. Like I said, I don't know this to be gospel only what I've been told. My issue with that is I have a great deal of personal information on this thing that I don't want the world privey to so if the battery goes I guess I will delete some of the information before sending it off to be repaired.

Other than that, I choose another Palm PDA because of their track record but of course this is different for eveyone.

I hope you get a lot of use from yours.

Any thoughts on Pocket PCs such as HP iPAQ vs. Palm PDAs? The Pocket PCs cost more but they run Windows applications such as Word and have more memory. I was wondering if it was worth the extra money to buy an iPAQ.
