Palm Pilot software for nursing

Hi there everybody. Anybody got some good links for FREE software apps for palm pilots? I found a couple of sites (the palm home site and another one, but I want to find more free stuff and quit wading through the 9 million programs they have that cost $50 or more).

Thanks everybody!!

The sites that I have found are:

1. epocrates.com

This is where to get the best drug book for the palm that I've seen. It was originally for resident MD's and has all that you need for clinical, including pediatric dosages. It is free and updates weekly and has the most up to date drugs on the market as well as any that have been removed.

2. medscape.com

This site has several programs for the palm, but the best one I found was the dosage calculator. It does the calculations for you and has a variety of calculations available (ex: APGAR scoring, ideal body weights etc). It is also free.

Good luck with your schooling!!

Will these programs all run on a Handspring Visor PDA that has the Palm Operating System? Hope this doesn't sound dumb, but I don't know much about PDA's and their operating systems.

You can use epocrates with any palm operating system, check with the site for specific download requirements. I didn't have any trouble loading it.

Everything that you can put on a palm you can put on a handspring because they have the same operating system, Palm OS. In fact, I think all PDAs have that system... there are quite a few brands out there now, there's the Sony Clie, and a couple of other ones.

Something to keep in mind... sometimes if you download an application, you also have to download a program to run the application. It's helpful to actually read the 'read me' file to see if you need to download something else for it to actually work.

I've found a lot of shareware available, and downloaded several demo versions of things. I've yet to *buy* a program for my visor.

I'm definitely going to check out some of those web sites--I haven't been able to find any strictly for nursing. iSilo.com is a good document reader which you can download a trial version of-their site has a link for ready made documents that has some good medical documents.

I have a Sony Clie which was pricey but has a rechargeable battery that lasts for days and I feel better not adding batteries to the landfill.

I've found the program, TestTrakker, useful as well....found it on the site, PediatricsOnHand.com - in their Patient Record Keeping section.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to all for sharing info on PDA's.

I've been reading everyone's post.....thanks for all the information.....I just purchased a pda off of ebay, now I can start downloading some of these programs for my peds and ob/byn clinicals

i really do like it, and i think it is one of the best programs for grade tracking. You might want to check out a program called Due Yesterday as well, its similar to 4.0Student, but it has a desktop application for your big computer too, which makes typing things in much easier, then when you hotsync it loads it all to your PDA. If I hadnt already purchased 4.0Student i probably would have gotten Due Yesterday instead. But, ive only got one semester left, so I'll just stick to what ive already got :)

Good luck!

I just tried Due Yesterday, this is a great program to keep track of everything class related and the price is right (free).

I got my palm for Christmas this year and I LOVE it. I got a Tungsten E2. I started out downloading Eppocrates and it was ok. But I forked over the $42 for Davis' drug guide and never looked back. It is geared for nurses so it includes nursing diagnoses and things like patient and family teaching. Since I started taking mine to work several other nurses have followed suit and bought one. You can also download Tabers and other nursing related programs. I got mine from the site http://www.unbound.com
