Online CPR renewal?

Is there such a thing? I have BLS for healthcare providers and it expires 1/13 and I would like to renew/extend the expiration.

I was specifically told that my school does not accept online CPR certification.

Are you having a problem finding a CPR class? Have you checked with the hospital or local fire department? Sometimes you can find nurses or firefighters who teach CPR classes.

I am all ready certified iin BLS I am trying to find an online renewal...

American Red Cross offers online CPR renewal...I did it one year. You learn the theory and take the test online, then you have to go to your local Red Cross chapter to do the skills testing in person.

However, CPR is not the same as BLS. I don't know if they have BLS online renewal classes...I would contact the AHA and ask, since they're the ones who offer BLS.

There are online CPR courses. My school only accepts AHA BLS for healthcare providers or American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Neither of those organizations has an entirely online certification process. Even for renewals, you have to absorb the material, take a test (in person for AHA), and then demonstrate skill with an instructor. I find it easier (and cheaper because the online class and the instructor will have separate fees) to just do the regular class.

Ask your school what they will accept.

I would be very skeptical if the entire course was online, with no skills testing whatsoever, and they still handed you the certification card.

Otherwise, the online version isn't really much different than the class version. Instead of watching videos in the classroom, you watch slideshows online. Instead of the written test in the classroom, you take the written test online. But as far as the American Red Cross was concerned, I still had to go in person to meet with an instructor and demonstrate all the skills successfully, in order to get my renewal card. ARC is not 100% online.

I must have been impressive enough as the chapter asked if I'd be interested in training as a CPR instructor.

I use to teach CPR and 1st Aid for BLS through AHA. It'd be wise of you need to make sure that your program or employer accept the accredited certification site before paying for anything. I know that AHA does have online recerts for ACLS and BLS, but you need to actually schedule a time to take the practical portion of the course.

Really? I think by the 5th time renewing my certification, I have demonstrated I have the skills to perform cpr and other bls, that taking a test online to keep up to date on current recommendations, should suffice.

You may feel that way, but that's not the way it works. The organization offering the certification has an obligation to make sure that you can safely and correctly perform the skills- not just answer test questions. In order for them to know that you can perform effective CPR and correctly use an AED, you need to demonstrate those skills. They can't just take your word for it based on your statements/past renewals.

Just recently, some of the most basic BLS steps were rearranged due to recommendations from the AHA. The A,B,C progression of CPR became C,A,B. This makes it all the more important that CPR be demonstrated in person.

Sorry if you feel it's unnecessary, but I'd personally prefer that anyone who might end up performing CPR on me, my family, or my patients has been evaluated in person by an instructor, and not just gotten their certification card because they took an online test with an answer sheet in front of them.

Even if said person has been a nurse for x amount of years, and is up to date with their certification? What does doing compressions in front of an instructor demonstrate? You are going to break ribs, regardless of doing this hands on training..
