All of a sudden the thought of blood or IV's makes me feel like I am going to faint. It never used to bother me and then today I was looking at examples of IV catheters and I nearly fainted

You'll face your fear and it will get better. The more exposed you get to it, I think the more comfortable you will get. You'll be ok hang in there! :)

what semester are you in? When I actually had to start learning how to deal w/ IV's and changing bags etc I got a little woozy too. It does get better tho.

The first time I handled some full tubes of blood I felt a little sick. (They were actually filled with my own blood). I realized that they were warm and suddenly felt funny.

I got over it quickly though. By the time I did my first stick, all I could think of was doing it properly, and I handled full bags of freshly drawn blood without even thinking about it anymore.

I was thinking that as soon as I read her question! You just beat me to the post!

PREGNANT? :rotfl: no way

I cut myself the other day with a tin can, I couldn't look at it and blindly put a bandaid on it and then antoher 3 to control the bleeding. the next day when I went to change the bandaid after a shower. I got all woozy and swooned to my kitchen floor in a towel no less, had hubby call 911 :angryfire . yeah I am sooooo not pregant...

i also had to get blood drawn and ended up face first in someone's cleavage (lab tech caught me as I was falling out of the chair) (I swear they were playing the Beatles yellow submarine song in the lab:rolleyes: )

Specializes in Emergency.

Sounds like you have a problem with the sight of your own blood. Worked with a paramedic several years ago that could start IV and draw blood all day long without problem. But as soon as he had to have his blood drawn they had to have him lie down in the lab as he would universally faint every time.

Also for what its worth EVERY FEMALE of child bearing age may be pregant unless they have a negative pregnancy test or they have had a hysterectomy. Dont know how many women I have treated in the ER that deny such but actually are- and yes I have even treated a nurse or two as well who were.

unless those little guys can fly or teleport there is absolutly no way I am pregnant.....and no my name is not Mary.

ive had blood drawn twice, both times i fainted. Just seeing the blood leaving my arm and thinking about how it was the hydrolic force of the pumping blood doing that I conked out :-) and im a 95Kg male :-) it looked pretty funny apparently.

I have issues with watching blood draws and shots, but when I do them myself, I'm just fine because I'm concentrating on not messing up. Hang in there and try it a few times. :)
