My Microbiology Teacher told me I can't become a Nurse

Hello,

Last time I visited the site, I got so much support from registered users of this forums, that I decided to enter the nursing program. Here is the link https://allnurses.com/pre-nursing-student/late-me-become-497456-page12.html#post4569262 in case any wanted to see it.

Anyway, I was told today after Microbiology lab " That I'm sorry you don't have what it takes to become a nurse. It's just not your thing.". I had trouble with the microscope today and a few other days, so based off of that, she assessed that I couldn't pass clinical. Being in her position and her being a doctor, I felt so bad, and I had to refrain from crying on the spot. Keep in my mind I'm a guy. I told her that I would worker harder and hopefully by the end of the semster she would change her opinion of me.

Has anybody ever had someone tell you that you can't do something? If so, how did you handle it?

I tried to turn it into a positive, but having a real hard time doing so. My school has a low passage rate for the nursing program like 30 percent or something low like that. I don't want to tell my wife or my family what was said to me today, so I rather ask you for some advice.

I mean she could of worded it so differently like "if you keep on this path, you won't be a nurse.", but she actually said "You don't have what it takes.". I mean when she see's me she see's a failure.

I was in Microbiology last term too. I was struggling to get an A and feeling very low. That weekend a friend and her Mother was visiting and of course I told them I was starting to be concerned about my school choice. The girl who is an EMT and her mother who is a Nurse actually laughed at me. The mother has been a nurse for years told me that she barely made it through Micro and not to worry about it, I would do fine as a Nurse. She has never used a Microscope since becoming a Nurse. The whole point of the class is to give you an idea of what it all means. Then it all clicked. I was clueless in Fund of Biology, but it did help with Micro. And I am sure as I go, what I did learn in Micro will help with other things to make a bigger picture. But that one section isn't the most important part of the whole picture. It's just a peek. The Dr who told you that isn't in the field your going into, and doesn't have a clue to what you do or don't need to know.

Im in the same situation. i want to be a nurse but this subject is so hard for that i feel like crying. i even asked my teacher for help and he says go the book but the book was not even a requirement. i left feeling really bad but i decided im not going to give up. I was wondering if there were any study guide or websites i could go to and study. also if anyone has any information on how to study and what i can do to better in the class. at least to sum up what microbiology is about to start. please help me!!

Well; since this thread has been bumped to infinity, I would like to know what ever happened to the original poster...:nailbiting:

I can't believe the professor said that so bluntly because of your in class ability. I didn't have the hang of the microscope for a week or so I mean it takes practice and skillfulness. Although we had two different professors I think that was rude and not necessary. My prof is a microbio nut and even though I struggled a bit with microscope usage and asked for help, I didn't hear any snide comments made about competency. I don't understand how that kind of a comment from a professor would help anyone at all:no::facepalm:

The best thing to do is to prove fools like this wrong. I hope the OP has done so since his post in 2011.

I once visited a very competitive nursing school in Florida to get more information on their accelerated program. The visit involved me meeting with a nursing professor who was on the admissions committee who reviewed my undergrad transcript, and I had not yet taken my science prereqs. She blatantly stated that I had a very slim chance of getting into their accelerated program as the average GPA of those accepted was 3.7 and I had at the time a 3.2 GPA. Two years later, I had a 4.0 under my belt in my science prereqs and an acceptance letter from that same accelerated program. But I declined their offer of admission and decided to accept the offer of a New York area nursing school instead.

Life indeed has been much better since.

I love how so many people are backing up the OP . its amazing how nurses have each others back. I love AN!

This just made me mad, I am a Lpn and in microbiology going for my Rn, and I have no clue how to use a microscope. My teacher is very helpful and said I will get better. Teacher's are suppose to encourage, not discourage . If I were you I would prove her wrong and make her eat her words. You can do it. You just learn and practice, never let anyone discourage you!!! Good luck
