May/June grads - preceptorship

I'm currently doing my preceptorship and was wondering about others doing the same. What kind of program (ADN or BSN)? How many hours are required to complete the preceptorship? What unit(s) are you doing it on? Are you doing more skills and feeling like a real nurse or just following a nurse around & 'helping' with things?

I'm in a BSN program which requires 225 hours for our preceptorship. My program requires our preceptor nurse to have a BSN. If no BSN nurse was available for our shift or unit, we were assigned to a ADN nurse with a co-preceptor who has BSN and could check on us and evaluate as needed. Due to the lack of nurses available for precepting, I have been assigned to 2 units. I do part of my hours on an ortho/neuro/urology unit with a ADN nurse and the other half of my hours on an acute stroke unit with a ADN nurse. As for skills, I am doing almost everything on my own now. Both of my nurses evaluated my ability to check on patients, give meds, and assess. I still ask for them to come in while I do procedures such as start IVs, put in NGTs, or pull out JP drains. I'm slowly building my confidence and really start to feel like I can handle being a nurse.

i'll do mine in July..but I am in a BSN program. We have 192 hours. we follow a nurse and pretty much do what she would do.

Specializes in Informatics.

Our ADN program has an optional 116 hour preceptorship. We can go to any unit on any hospital that will accept us. I'm having such a great time. I really am starting to feel like a real nurse, and I'm only 32 hours into it.

Specializes in Cardiac.

Ours is 120 hours. I picked a great hospital. I'm doing clinicals there now. I have PIXIS access, which is great, and the ICU I picked is great. I did rotations on Med-Surge ICU and they let me take my own patient and I did everything with my RN looking over me. She would remind me if I forgot something, or just let me know protocols, but other than that I had to do everything on my own. It was awesome!

Specializes in CCRN.

I'm in an ADN program, 120 hours in 5 weeks for us. I chose a med/surg floor. Will start in four weeks but have met my preceptor and am really excited to be matched with her.

I am in an ADN program. We had to do 120 hours in 5 weeks. Also when we graduate we have to do an additional 120 hours of intership before we can sit for the boards. I have choosen to go to ICU. I get to do everything the preceptor is there to help and for me to ask questions to.

Specializes in Critical Care, Cardiac Cath Lab.

ADN program - 160 hours to be completed in 10 weeks.

I will be in an ICU with a relatively high acuity.

Diploma program- 64 total hours. Telemetry floor.

i'm in an associates program and we do 2 8 hour shifts each week for 5 wks. mostly we are on med surg floors or neuro/ortho floors. we don't really get to pick.

130 hours in my ADN program starting in May. I'll be on the Psych unit.

my preceptorship for my BSN is similar to crmson lady. we have to get 225 hours with 14 of our hours being meeting hours. I'm doing my precepting on the acute stroke unit also. My preceptor is awesome. She's very good at nursing and I'm learning a lot from her. I take on my own patients also. On a typical day i'll have three patients to care for. I'm also building my confidence. Our hours have to be completed by April 13th. I have 29 more med-surg hours and 14 meeting hours left. It is all winding down now:) , but so far everything has been fine.
