I agree, this is shady and a reputable school would not do this...but reputable schools also have waiting lists, don't cost an arm and a leg and are difficult to get in to because the admission criteria is meant to weed out people who don't belong there.

I hope you chose not to pay that kind of money. Your future self will thank you if you just study hard, apply to a better school and accept that there are indeed situations that are "too good to be true". I am sorry this happened to you. It is a predatory practice.

Yikes!! $10 grand just to re-take an exam?? I hope what you mean is that you have to re-do the semester and it will cost 10 grand! If not, I would be running fast from that school!!!

Regardless of whether or not the school policy sucks, it is school policy. You say that you studied (which I totally believe) and that NOTHING from the outline of the syllabus and the document with notes that you got came on there. However, I had plenty of classes that had exams that had questions that had nothing to do with the info from the powerpoint, study guides, notes in class, etc. BUT, the info was in the textbook in the chapters we went over. I know way too many students that I went to school with that failed exams because they focused only on the handouts, study guides, and powerpoint lectures to study and didn't study the actual textbook. They did wonderful on exams that stuck to the notes, but didn't do well at all when the exam deviated from the notes.

Aside from that, if they are asking for $10 grand just to re-sit for the exam (rather than for the entire semester), I would RUN, RUN, RUN from that school! You are going to be in debt up to your ears by time you graduate if they are charging $10 grand simply to retake an exam. I'd hate to know what they charge for everything else!! I would leave that school and do something else while you sit on a waiting list (sucks I know) at a better school that is not like your current one! Unfortunately, not.done.yet. stated, reputable schools have waiting lists and are difficult to get into so that the admission criteria weeds out the one's that aren't meant to be there. I would just find something else to do while I found a reputable, not-so-shady school, and got on their waiting list!!

The subject had no textbook. All we had to rely on was the syllabus and slides and activities we did in class (which came from the syllabus).

Jeesh! Ya, I'd just run as fast as you could from this school. Then, I would get on waiting lists at other schools and do something else in the meantime - maybe find a job in healthcare like PCT.

CallMeSally: You don't specify the subject, but I find it hard to believe you can teach any nursing course from handouts. You are attending an unscrupulous diploma mill that is charging a load of cash for what sounds like a poor education. Move on--you and your future patients will be glad that you did. Best of luck!

Have you confirmed if your school is accredited, OP? This would make me wonder.

It's accredited. I made sure before I attended.

I'm not sure if you know the subject but it's Written and Oral. It's sorta like English Language.

Okay, now I'm a little confused! So, you're saying that the course is "Written and Oral?" So, an English course?

Isn't that something you should have taken as a pre-req before starting the nursing program. But, that's doesn't really matter.

You said in your post "It was multiple choice with an essay but for some odd reason the first ten or fifteen questions they were paragraphs." That makes sense for an English course. Having multiple choice and essay questions. Also, having long questions or statements that go on for paragraphs, because you have to read it and find the info that you need, or find mistakes, or whatever. So, that makes a lot of sense with an English course.

The fact about having to pay so much to retake the exam is ridiculous. That alone would make me look into transferring my credits somewhere else. No reputable place is going to have you pay that much to retake an exam!! You are most likey going to have to be on a waiting list to get into a reputable nursing program, but it will be worth the wait to not have to pay ten grand!!!

It sounds like your school is interested in money, and not in educating the students properly for an a career that will have people's lives in your hands - it calls for a proper education, which calls for a reputable school!! Not to mention the fact that they are only having you learn from handouts and powerpoints, no textbooks - I guess that's okay if it's just an English class, but who's to say they wouldn't do the same for nursing courses. (But, of course, why would they want you spending money on textbooks when, instead, they could come up with something ridiculous to charge you for in order to get that money your saving by not buying textbooks!! Haha!)
