Is there a resource students can use when being assigned nursing instructors? We are being given a choice at my school, and I'd prefer to learn from a reasonable and good instructor. ratemyprofessor.com is sporadic and doesnt have all of the nursing instructors.....any ideas?

That is the site I was going to suggest. Myspace also has something like that I think. Do a google search and see what you come up with...

Yeah, if you go on MySpace you can search for your school and look up the instructors that you may have. It has helped me out once or twice, knowing which to avoid. However, if you don't have a choice of instructors the ratings are also good because they help you know what to expect.

And dont completely rely on that type of information... One of my CI's had really bad reviews that she was "too hard" and "expected to much"... she was my favorite CI I ever had. I learned so much and was so glad that I took her. I feel that those reviews often reflect how well a person did in the class and sometimes take it out on the professor for doing poorly. Just keep that in mind.

Good Luck!

Go straight to the horse....previous students who have taken the courses. Ask them their opinion of the course and I don't just mean if the instructor is "an easy A."

As your peers about the instructor's clarity, knowledge/passion of the subject being taught, availability during office hours, willingness to clarify confusing topics, etc.

I'd rate it by talking to other former students...and go from there. Although the person who had the worst was my fave, too! She just (gasp) EXPECTED you to know what you were doing!

don't believe rumors. i was told my 3rd semester med surg instructor was the one everyone wanted. the other instructor everyone, including nurses who have graduated 5 years ago, hated is because that ci apparently expected too much. imo that ci was too easy!

i know this first hand because i had to make up a clinical at the end of the semester and did so with the other ci's group. at the time, my critical thinking and clinical organization skills were much further along then the students in the other group. in fact, i had time to help them out and get my work done. i can safely say now, that thankfully, my ci was the hardest ci for 3rd semester!!!

my school does not allow us to pick, but had i known my ci was the hardest going into 3rd and i had a choice, i probably would not have chosen her at the time. i did not have the self esteem or belief in my nursing abilities to handle the "baptism in fire" that i experienced in med surg ii. however, i am very grateful to her now!

i am one of the best nurse externs on my floor because of what i went through 3rd semester. i am not trying to toot my own horn... i am getting this informaiton from the head of the department, nurisng staff, and other nurse externs that are encouraged by staff rns and the nurse extern coordinator to run to me for help (everybody talks in the hospital setting)!!

btw, this summer is a blast for me because i have too much opportunity to apply what i have learned in med surg ii. thus, my advice to you is unless you know of someone who has your personality and goals plus can be objective, you are wasting your time trying to fish around for information. just pray you get a hard but fair instructor like mine! :twocents:

I heard horror stories about a couple clinical instructors from classmates whom I respect, but it turned out when I had them they were my favorite instructors. So you can't always believe ratings.
