HRSA scholarship-- is it true it's random?

Hi folks,

I just applied to the HRSA scholarship and wondered if others could tell me how they pick and how many they offer. I have an EFC of $0 and meet other criteria. I read somewhere on a forum, I think, that it is computer generated and random. I guess that would be the only way since you aren't competing with grades or essays. Is it true?

And another question- if you were a recipient at some point, was it hard to get work when you got out? I checked the eligible locations around here and there aren't a ton.

Thanks!

Hi Im not sure but I think they choose based on amount of funding. They give full funding to those with 0 EFC first and then from there they give whats left from lower EFC on up. I read something like that on the website. Im not sure if its exactly random I think they award according to #of eligible applicants/funding. Hope this helps a little!

Hi!

I applied for the same scholarship... can you let me know when/if you hear anything? Thanks in advance.

I was awarded the scholarship last year and will continue to recieve funding throughout this coming year.

Last year of the people with 0 EFC's 220 were randomly selected from the 1600 applicants who also had 0 EFC's

I was under the impression that we could work any place that met these qualifications:

NSP participants must provide full-time or part-time clinical service in a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses located in a State. Eligible health care facilities include:

Indian Health Service Health Centers;

Native Hawaiian Health Centers;

Hospitals;

Federally Qualified Health Centers;

Rural Health Clinics;

Nursing Homes;

Home Health Agencies;

Hospice Programs;

State or local public health departments including public health clinics within the departments;

Skilled Nursing Facilities; and

Ambulatory Surgical Centers.

Apoole, when did they inform you that you had been awarded the scholarship? Did you have to inform your school or did they contact your school?

ooh, those odds are scary! i think all with $0 EFC should get one-- you know they need us and the government has enough money.

good luck to those who applied. i will definitely post if/when i hear something. from what i have read of previous years, they let the recipients know first, then those who did not receive it.

thanks all for responses

I was in the hospital first week of September and got a bunch of messages that I had been selected this past year.

Unfortunately I ended up attending a non-accredited school and could not accept.

So if this year is anything like last year, they begin late the first week of September. I am sure there are several rounds as some people will not qualify or will turn down the offer, like I did.

Best wishes to everyone who applied!
