Hand Washing Progect--Help !

Ok for my techniques class we have to do a group project for teaching school aged kids proper handwashing techniques. The ages of the kids can be between 3year to 3rd grade. We will be going to the schools & presenting our project to the kids.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I found "henry the hand" online, but I know a group used him last year. Does any one know of anyother sourse to find info on this?

I'm finding it very hard to come up with a somewhat original idea. Plus I've never taught kids so I'm not sure where to find info.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them :) Thanks!

I just did a handwashing project for 3-4 yr olds and it worked great!

Also, I added a little piece where I used different colors of glitter and gave each one a different color and then had each person shake their neighbors hand and showed them how germs spread.

The American Red Cross has a handwashing program for pre-K to 4th grade called Scrubby Bear. It comes with a video for the kids to watch and a bear that has "germs" (white fluoresent powder) on it. The kids pass it around and then put their hands under a black light to see all the germs. They then go and wash their hands the proper way and check them again to see if they did it right and got rid of them all. They also become members of the Scrubby Bear Handwashing club. It is a really neat program, I taught it to 2 preschool classes last semester, and also at work to 3 school's 2nd grade classes for the visit the hospital tour. It is a big hit with kids, and it really shows the importance of clean hands to them.

Our school has the kits available for us to borrow, but I think you could also contact your local Red Cross and they may have one for you to use. I had a blast doing it, and will be annually for our hospital (being volunteered from my boss)!

Hope that helps.

We had to do a "mock" teaching plan for this topic. We came up with a plan to teach kids handwashing by sitting in a circle, demonstrating how important it is to wash hands before eating and after bathroom, etc. So making it fun was our plan. I don't remember all of it but I do remember we were making up a song to sing along (so the proper amount of time is used to wash effectively" and then teaching about using sani gel by having everyone play a game and raise their hands up in the air to get a squirt of gel...

but I cannot remember what types of other stuff we did! :):) Maybe that will give you some sort of start!!!!

Thank You so much for the advice. Got some great ideas! I'll let ya'll know how things go.

I did this for my Girl Scout Brownie troop some years back. It really made an impression on them.

A variation of the glitter thing is to find a hair gel container with a screw off lid. Add glitter to it (whatever color) and have the kids rub the gel all over their hands and let it dry. Then tell them to go wash their hands until they think they're clean, and wait for the surprised look when they still see "germs" all over! Sounds like a fun project! Have a good time!

We did a similar project during the summer term. My particular group did teaching on fire safety, but about 4 of the other groups in my class did handwashing. They did things similar to the glitter mentioned on that link, and all in all it was a big hit. They also made posters of various types (some with velcro - more interactive, etc). Feel free to PM me if you have any questions concerning the logistics of the whole teaching-learning process, it's still pretty fresh in my mind! :chuckle
