i'm a third year ucdavis undergraduate student. i would like to apply nursing school, after graduate! but my GPA is 3.1, i know its pretty bad, i try my best! it's hard to get an A in Davis

what else i can do to be more competitive? :crying2:

Some people would advise you to repeat courses, especially prerequisite science courses, to improve your grades. You might want to consider doing this at a community college if you decide to go this route.

Most students attend community colleges, so yes, most nursing schools accept community college grades. I am certain one could find out otherwise by checking admissions information on the various school websites. And yes, repeating courses is frowned upon, but so is a low GPA. There are some schools that will not accept the second grade, others that limit how many classes that can be repeated, and others that have other criteria. This is to be investigated with each program that you apply to. Totally up to you whether you want to apply to programs where repeated courses are accepted.

I am pretty sure you can't just repeat classes b/c you want to improve your grades. I think you have to have a D or a F to repeat a class. This varies w/ schools but I am pretty sure this is how most schools are like anyways.

In my experience most colleges are willing to let you repeat a class--think about it; they're getting a two-fer deal on tuition! Some colleges may have restrictions, but a lot of smaller private or "for profit" schools will not hesitate to let you repeat a class.

^ you have to have a valid reason to repeat a class via academic forgiveness.... saying you want to improve that B to an A isn't going to cut it. Pre-reqs are already saturated with students so why would the school let you retake a class that you have already finished. They are going to leave those spots open for people who have been waiting to take those classes.

A bunch of nursing schools will also deduct your points for repeats so do you really think it will help you more than it will hurt you?

I would transfer out of Davis and go to a CC if I were you.

I guess it just depends on the school. The school I did my prereqs at had no restrictions on retaking classes. But they were a private school and many classes were online. Or you could retake the class at a different school. Doesn't hurt to check around.

This is not the case with my school. I am currently re-taking a pre-req, simply because I wanted an A. No one has ever said anything about it at our school :)

The nursing program at my school encourages students to retake classes to improve their GPA. BUT if you repeat a class, it must be completed (as opposed to in progress) before applying for the nursing program, or they will count your old grade.

Financial Aid recipients can not get aid to retake classes that they have passed, though, it is at the student's expense.

which nursing school you are attending? i think my GPA of prerequisite is ok, just my overall GPA of major is 3.1. i heard its not a good idea to retake the classes for applying public schools, but its ok for private schools. thank you for helping me!

My GPA was a lovely 2.5 before nursing school...I got it up to a 3.4 my first semester...graduated with a 3.14.

I got advanced placement due to being a LPN.
