And the total was a little over $500. That's pretty close to what I expected. I've already looked all of them up online and only found one that was significantly cheaper at half.com. I guess used nursing textbooks (in the most recent edition, no less) are a rare commodity.
The syllabus was not ready yet, and that will be another $30 something more. They tell me that it will be my "Bible" all semester. I'm eager to get my hands on it.
I skimmed the Nursing Fundamentals book for bedtime reading last night, and boy howdy, that's a lot of material! I'm kinda waiting to look at the rest until I start school because they are still sealed in plastic, and once they are opened they cannot be returned. It still doesn't seem real that I'm actually going to start nursing school in less than 3 weeks.

First semester seems overwhelming at first glance, but man is it FUN once you get into it! GL! :)

The book store does not have all my books in yet. I am stressing however because they are not posting the pre-reading list until the 18th and I leave for a trip on the tenth which I do not get back from unil the 19th and classes start the 21st. I can look the list up on line but I do not want to take 10+ books with me on vacation!!

I know what you mean I have to wait until the 14th to get my books because of fianicial aid. The syllabus is on blackboard and will not be in the book store until the 21st and will be limited. I emailed the teacher and she told me to read about seven chapters and we will not have access to blackboard until the first day of classes which is not until the 21st and the total price of my books are over $690. So I feel your pain.

Totally feel your pain. First semester, my books were (retail price) over $1100, but fortunately I went through half.com and only paid about $800, which still stung but not as bad as $1100. Second semester, books totaled $500 - again, half.com and buy.com to the rescue, so I only spent about $375. Spring is supposedly going to be another $500, and then we get a break for our last semester and only need to spend $100-150. This is my second degree, and I have NEVER had to spend anywhere near this much on books, not even from my snooty private first college where even the candy bars were marked up in the bookstore!
One of my classmates told me about bookfinder4u.com - they look up your book and find the cheapest price for you from all the different retailers (half, amazon, buy, etc). Don't know if anyone else knew about it but thought I'd post it for mutual benefit!
Happy book buying...
Oh my soul! That is a lot of money!!! Is that for just one semester?

Lucky you at $500.......... I went to my campus's bookstore on Monday to scope out the damage... and with all the REQUIRED books/syllabi/lecture binders it is just over $600.
Ouch........

I have found out that not all the nursing books are necessarily cheaper online. For example, I purchased Pharmacology and the nursing process at my school bookstore for $67 brand new. Online, most of the websites were around the same price or higher. I did save on the Medical Surgical by brunner, I purchased it on Amazon for $43, at my bookstore it was $101. I also saved on the fundamentals by potter and perry. I believe I saved over $150. I spent a total of $175, not bad.
Yes, however, I think a lot with carry over to the following semesters so it will be cheaper as they go on.

Wow!!!! Books are so expensive. I got the ISBN numbers and went online to compare...600 plus for bookstore prices. I pd 350.00 total and that includes shipping for my books online. The books are in new condition. I LOVE saving money. I think bookstores charge WAY too much money. Tuition is high enough alone.

I'm at about $1100 for the first semester.
