Hey everyone!!

So I'm starting nursing school in the Fall and I was just wondering how clinicals are for the first semester... I know that my clinicals won't start until week 9 of the semester.... But do you do any hospital Clinicals during first semester or is it mainly nursing homes and rehabilitation centers???

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I am starting nursing school this summer—in one week, actually. I got my schedule for clinicals and they will be in a hospital. My school has clinical rotations at three area hospitals. I'm sure we will be getting experience in an LTC, as I heard a student who is a couple of semesters ahead of me mention it. I just don't think it happens in the first semester for us.

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

Depends on your program. I went through a BSN program and during our 1st semester, we spent a couple of weeks in an assisted living facility focusing on therapeutic communication, establishing a rapport and companionship. For the rest of the semester, we were in a nursing home. We transitioned to the hospital setting during our second semester.

My first year had no clinical, but the second, third, and fourth years all had clinical 3 days a week, 7-hour days (+ one hour of post-clinical conference per day), all in acute care hospitals except for public health and psych semesters. Add in the rest of the bachelor's course work and that made for some really long days. Um, weeks. Um, years.

Specializes in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

Our pre-nursing class (CNA) was in a nursing home, then in our first semester, we only spent two weeks (1 day per week) at the nursing home.

Our first clinical was two weeks into the course and it's been busy ever since!

Just had orientation today, my school has 8 clinical sites but because I'm a hybrid nursing student (all lectures online) I only have a choice of 2 clinical sites and will most likely be assigned to the one closest to me which is a hospital, I'm very happy for that because I was hoping to get assigned to this particular hospital....so excited for the Fall :-)

Depends on your particular program. I never once set foot in a nursing home during my clinical rotations. Everything was in a hospital. The focus of first semester clinicals was mainly head to toe assessment, ADL's, and basic medication administration and procedures like dressing changes and such.
