Does this make me a CHEATER???

So, I am a first semester student, which is over in one month. I have a friend that I met in the hospital where we volunteer at. We met while we were waiting on acceptance letters. We get along fantastic. We decided to enroll in the same classes. There are a few reasons for this. 1. We live 30 miles away from the college and can carpool. 2. It is nice to have someone to throw ideas and incouragement to. 3. Someone to keep you forging on. Funny thing is we don't study together, except to watch outdated videos. We are both the type that do better on our own.

In lecture, we have long, connected tables. There are 9 seats in each row, 4 rows deep. My friend and I sit up front (I always do), at the end. I am a creature of habit. I get there early so I can have the same seat. I am easily distracted, especially if I have to sit in the back row.

The last test with this instructor, she pulled up a chair against the wall, right next to our row. My friend and I felt a little intimidated, but hey..still got my A. :lol2: Then yesterday, our new Dean of Nursing came to meet us and tell us that it has come to their attention that there is cheating going on. Mainly from the earlier classes telling the later classes what is on the test. Well, I don't know who is in the 8am class, nor in the 2pm class. I am in the middle.

So, today we have a test. I wouldn't even really talk to my friend this morning (we don't carpool on Weds, since she has micro and stays at the college). I was zoned in on the test and didn't want to break my concentration. I went to the classroom alone. She got there and took her usual seat next to me. The instructor immediately starts by telling everyone that they need to remove their hats today. All backpacks and purses are to be closed (of course), no water bottles....you know...all the normal stuff...(except for the hat thing). Then she says that she is going to move a "few" of us to different seats for the test. I whispered to my friend, "gee, let me think", she agreed. So, 1st to get moved was this spunky girl behind me, then...ME. I was to move to my least favorite place...the back row. At least I was on the end. I was really afraid of bombing my test from being moved (out of my element...like I said earlier). I said quite a long prayer before the test to keep my concentration in line and keep my mind clear. Then she moved about 3 more people. So, move 5 out of a class of 35? What does that tell everyone?? If I hadn't moved, I would certainly believe that the teacher believed they may be cheating. The more I think about this, the angrier I get. I am NOT a cheater. Haven't cheated on a test my entire college career. I have pulled straight A's. I have studied hard. Just ask my family:lol2: .

Well, during the test, she came and stood next to me almost the whole time. When she wasn't standing next to me, she was standing next to my friend. (We were both on the end of the row, same side of the room, and a large room for an instructor not to be mosying around...all around!) Her and I do not score the same, she is actually a letter grade behind me, enough to not think we were cheating off each other. We don't miss the same questions either. We are given rotating tests, like she has version A, I have B, next one has A, etc.

I am just beside myself. Do I have to be getting a C in nursing school to not be a cheating suspect?

There was definately a better way to of handled this situation. Move almost everyone. That way 5 people aren't singled out.

I want to email her (very professionally). But I refuse until after my final grade is posted. I am sooooooooooo close to getting an A, and I've worked too hard to get this far to let my anger take over. What would you do? I dont like when my integrity is shot down infront of all my classmates, some who know me well, others who I never interact will because it's our only class together---right now.

I would love to hear from some of the NS instructors from this board. Why would you only pick a select number to move before a test...honestly?

Thanks for listening to my rant. Most people say doing this makes them feel better, but that isn't the case here. Integrity can take you far, or lack of it can bring you down fast. I have it, but do they know it?

Best part is that I think I aced the test, but is that really a good thing???:nono: That isn't allowed in our school I guess.

Hi I am an instructor & I agree. They should not move a handful of people. I do assigned seating for all tests. I have index cards that have alpha/numberical info: 1. Adams, J. 2. Brown, M. etc.

I put the cards on the desks in a variety of numerical sequences for example: 1-48 with 2 behind 1 , 3 behind 2 etc the next time it could be the odd numbers at the front of the room or Reversed order: 48 Zulu to 1 Adams.

It is fast easy random & it works. I do not decide until before the test what pattern I am going to use. I do this because I had siblings/spouses that always sat together, plus it avoids the issue of possible cheating.

The hats: well baseball caps can have answers on the bill, water bottles, the answers on the label that has been replaced, cell phones to text answers etc.

I would email the instructor when you are ready. Suggest assigned seating. I have used it for as many as 48 students.

As to the different class times passing the info to the next class, that's the insturctors problem, not yours. They can create different versions of the exams. It does take more time though & it makes it difficult to compare grades/statistics, then the problem of students that will of course complain, that the other class had an easier test, blah blah.

Take care & stay focused on your ultimate goal.

Is it possible that one of your fellow students has a grudge against you and may have falsely reported to the teacher that you cheat? It sounds to me as if something has happened to make your teacher think this way. Dont' sweat it. The important thing is that you are making excellent grades, and once the teacher is satisfied that you are truly EARNING your As, she should back down and leave you alone. Since she moved the girl behind you as well, perhaps she thought the girl behind you was looking at your paper? I don't know. Just hang in there and keep doing what you are doing. She'll catch on eventually.

No, we actually get along really well (those that I know). Maybe the teachers just get concerned about cheating when you have a good bond with a group. Funny thing I just realized. The girl behind me just started sitting there last week, but she is doing about the same as me (I think). Is it the fact that we are not struggling like over 50% of the class is? But, if she moved her, then why move me too? From the students I know, no one has mentioned cheating to me, asking me for answers, or even for study help. We are a pretty mature group when it comes to our studies. Obviously, not everyone is, and sadly that happens.

I don't know how to satisfy her that I am earning my grade, we only have our final left.

I'm feeling much better now. It was all in the "moment". It has been on my mind for the majority of the evening, but I'm letting it go. I know who I am, and what my values are. That is good enough for me! Now if that darn twitch in my eye would just stop:lol2: .

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Sailornurse! I agree with the hats/bottles etc. We have had that instruction from test one (except the hat thing). My idea would have been to have the first person in the front row stand up, then every other person. Third row does the same and they just switch seats to the same "location" on the other row. Then the 2nd and 4th row does the same. Now everyone is sitting next to someone new and it can happen quick. Actually it would have been faster than the way she did it today. Gosh, I hope I aced that test! I know I missed one for sure. Scantron was broken, so who knows when...

My first thought was 'someone is probably cheating off of you!'

Maybe your 'friend' is cheating off of you. You never know.

I don't think there is a reason to not ask about it, if it's done in the right way? ..."I'm very concerned about being moved. Was I moved because you thought I was cheating, or did you see someone cheating off of me? I try to keep my paper covered up as much as possible, and my eyes on my own paper. I just feel the whole class thinks I've been cheating when I've been working extremely hard to get the grades I get."

OR..... You can just have faith that the instructor stood beside you in order to view the rest of the class. She may have reason to believe you are not the one to worry about.

Sorry this is going on. :kiss

Well, it sounds like you are doing an incredible job, Woog, so keep it up and don't let the b*****ds get you down!

Ahhhhhh....

I got an A!

Now onto the final. I can only miss a max of 7/80 in order to have an A in the class. Hmmmmm. I guess I need to get busy. Of course, we don't have lecture on the 2nd half of Fluid and Electrolytes. We had a VERY fast lecture on the beginning of the topic on Tuesday, where the powerpoints given to us didn't match the ones she used, and let us know that most of her info didn't come from our required text, but a different one she has (didn't tell us which one she uses) and she won't be there this Tuesday for personal reasons, so we are to self learn. Wowsers. From what I hear, she really pushes this topic (totally understandable why), so I'm sure we will see a plethera of test questions. She advised us to go to the bookstore and purchase another book (Think it is the made incredibly easy). I'm going to Barnes right now before I go to the hospital to volunteer. Could I possibly get enough learning from this by May 16th, as well as my other chapters, 25 page individual case study, lab sign-offs, etc, etc, etc.? I guess I have to if I want that A!!:lol2:

Haven't read all the answers, but don't feed into this childish stuff.

You'll get your "A" and that'll prove your point. The rest will sink or swim.

In "real world" nursing, this crazy stuff happens too, so don't take it personally, ok?

It happens everywhere, but I was more upset that it gives others an inclination that you may be a cheater. Especially when you have a decent grade...

I sure do hope I get an A for this course. It sure is tough. I haven't had a B grade yet, so I'll have to learn to function with that when it comes.

Others that got moved...well, some of them felt the way I did, and some thought nothing of it. That just difference in how each person operates. In times like these, yes, it is a downfall. But, I'm creeping up on 36, so I doubt I'll ever change. I'm over my hissy fit though. ;)

Thanks for the cheers! Lots of studying to do. Geez, I feel a pimple comin' on:lol2:

Woogy, :balloons:

congratulations on your A, and don't sweat the petty stuff. You know you worked hard for this, and it's really unfortunate that your professor is being a jackass :trout: (is that what this smilie means?) Keep working as hard as you are and you'll see that no matter how horrible your professor is making you feel (trust me, I understand, b/c I, too, care what people think about me) you know you've done the work, and the studying. Congratulations again, and good luck on that final A!!!:monkeydance: :monkeydance:

I have wanted to use that smiley too, but didn't know what it was for. Thanks for your motivation. I am reallllly going to try for that A! I am determined, but those questions........

At least it is only 25% cummulative. But that is a lot of material to only have 20 questions on. There is so much that we have covered. They like to pick a question from one obscure sentence, one that you don't pay much attention to. Also, asking for medical Dx.

Ahhh, back to my F&E made easy book. Already getting pretty far, but it sure does get more confusing the deeper you get. Maybe I need to look for F&E for Dummies.:lol2:
