Do nurses make good instructors?

Many of my instructors in nursing school had bedside voices in the classroom that were soothing, relaxing, and I hate to say it put me right to sleep. Did anyone else have this experience?

It sounds like you think that your instructors were boring?

Are you considering becoming an instructor?

I suppose it depends on the individuals ...... some nurses make excellent nursing instructors, some may not (same with teachers in school, or profs in college). I'm very pleased with all of our instructors - they really seem to go the extra mile to be sure we "get it !!!"

One of the roles of a nurse is that of teacher. Patience is also one of the virtues of a good nurse.

I had to laugh a bit when I read your post. I can think of one or two instructors I've had over the years who actually made class fun and interactive. Now, that's an instructor!

Some do, some don't, same as in any other occupation/profession. Being knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced at doing something doesn't necessarily mean one will be good at teaching it.

I had great classroom teachers who were really bad at being clinical instructors and I've had clinical instructors who were really bad at being classroom teachers, I've had ones who were great at both sides bedside and classroom and ones who were really really bad at both:D

I think it all depends on the person receiving the info. Some learn better with that soothing, calm voice, others respond better to more animated, vocal teachers.

Some instructors in the classroom would give "real life" stories on the topic being discussed which made it more real and understandable to the students whereas others would do nothing BUT tell the "oh, one time when I was working (fill in the blank) unit, such and such happened and I, this and that..." which was interesting but it wasn't giving us the info we needed to understand the why/how those things happened.

I had quite a few instructors and honestly there was only one that bored me to tears, I just couldn't stand the thought of sitting for 6 hours listening to her drone on and on. She knew her stuff about the subject she taught, very very intellegent woman but she was booorrrriiinnnnnggggg.

Thanks, for the replies. I honestly had many good instructors. I am not a good audio learner to begin with and the sweet, loving, relaxing voices some of the nursing instructors had made me zone out. I would think to myself this voice would be create if I was in the hospital having anxiety about surgery.

I say NO. Because most of them have no background in education and cant answer questions that are asked of them. They constantly use the "you should use your critical thinking skills" !@#$% reply to questions they cant answer. We've had instructors say, "that is the answer because I have 15 years experience." oh I hate nursing school by the way because of this, but I am doing really well! have a 3.92 and 1 year left. Thanks for listening.
