Dec Grads, some questions?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

hey gals & guys,

for those dec grads, just a few quick questions:

1) when is your pinning ceremony?

2) what do y'all have to wear?

3) do you have a graduate nurse position already or are you still interviewing? if so, where?

4) for those with a position, when do you start?

5) which, if any, nclex review courses are you going to take?

6) will or have you joined any professional organizations?

my answers:

1) my pinning ceremony is this saturday, dec 13th. that is, if i passed! due to tmj surgery & a migraine, i missed 2 classes, so i completely bombed that test. 78 is passing, and our final counted as 35% of our final grade. i needed a 76 on the final to pass. i feel pretty secure about it, but as y'all know, in nursing school, nothing is for certain! we will find out if we pass or not, when we show up to take the hesi tomorrow (wed, dec 10th @ noon). we do not find out our final grade, until we walk in the room to take the hesi exit exam. from what i understand, as we try to enter, they will tell us yes or no. can you say, "extremely embarrassing" for those that don't pass? i will be carrying plenty of kleenex in my pocket, just in case. i will completely lose it, if i don't make it!

2) we don't have a set uniform. we just have to wear all pure white, but no scrubs. in my humble opinion, i think we should have a set dress code. since, i don't know if i have passed or not, i haven't bought anything! i plan on purchasing just a nurse's dress from landau or something like that. also, i believe, it is going to be incredibly difficult to find pure white shoes in the middle of december, but i am going to try!

3) i recently accepted a graduate nurse position in the ed. my nurse internship in l/d didn't work out, because they are fully staffed. however, i totally believe that i ended up in a better position. working in the ed will increase my assessment, prioritization and clinical skills, more than working in l/d. it is exactly what i need to become a better nurse.

4) that is an interesting question. we haven't narrowed down a date, yet. originally, i thought the 15th, but i decided to take a week off and relax. also, i wanted to take a quick trip down to new orleans to see the memphis tigers beat north texas in the new orleans bowl. go tigers! then, i have to have the week of jan 5th - 9th off, because our school requires that we go through a nclex review course before they will sign off on our nclex applications. i have no clue when i will start.

5) our review course through the school, i believe is hurst, but several of us are going to take rhinehart, or vice versa. i can't remember right now. also, my work pays for a review course and the taking of the nclex.

6) i have joined tna/ana, ena and awhonn. my first goal, besides passing the nclex, is to get cen (certification of emergency nursing) withing my first 2 years out of school.

congratulations to all the dec grads! :balloons:

I read your post and I just look back to yesteryear and I smile, we had candle lighting ceremony, a cloak and capping ceremony and at the end the pin was done on the graduation gown with a peach cowl. My cap is yellow in the closet. Do they even use caps in Nursing Schools anymore?

barbpick,

well, we don't use caps, but several of us suggested the idea to show respect for the hard-working nurses that were in our shoes a "few years back". (i won't mention that my husband thought it would be incredibly sexy: nurse's white dress, cap & high heels! *wink*wink*)

:imbar :wink2:

1.I graduate on Friday evening, if I passed. I will find out today. I'm pretty sure I did, though.

2. We are not having a pinning ceremony, b/c there are only 6 nursing students graduating. The director of the program is going to pin us on graduation night onto our gowns. We are invited to join in on the pinning ceremony for the May graduating class.

3. I have a job waiting for me on a med/surg unit. I don't know when I start.

4. I'm going to take a Kaplan review course for a week along with 2 other students.

5. I have not joined any professional groups. I eventually want to get certified in med/surg.:nurse:

Our pinning is Friday(3 days away)! I already have a job,I am an LPN and can stay where I am,but I am definately exploring my options, dont know how it will be working as an RN on a unit where I have been an LPN for many years. Have 2 interviews for next week.I am taking the Kaplan review with 3 other people from my program.Good luck to us all, we made it!!!

Question? I graduate in December of next year (God willing), and we don't get pinned until the following May because the school only does one graduation ceremony a year. My fellow students are pretty peeved by this. Is this common or does my school just suck? LOL

At our pinning ceremony, we were all asked to wear a white uniform (of course, there had to be a few who decided that "white uniform" meant "cocktail dress/pantsuit").

We were handed a single red rose each, and our names were called as our instructors put our pins on us.

Oh my...what a lovely ceremony! Wasn't much, but it meant the world to me....

(Especially since my brother came all the way from Georgia on his motorcycle as a surprise to me...and i hadn't seen him in about 5 years prior to that.)

We could wear our caps if we wanted to, and I wanted to, but was afraid I would be the only one, so I didn't, then when we got there, there were a few caps....:o But it was ok....

1) Pinning ceremony is Wednesday, December 17th 8pm.

Not sure exactly what to expect....although we are to bring a penlight (no fire/candles allowed in auditorium??)

2) All white. Basically, our 'uniform' without the white vest-thingy that has the school patch and our i.d. on it.

3) 2 offers pending, deciding which to accept. Both telemetry positions with critical care pathways; both excellent facilities. Tough choice!

4) Both said that I can start whenever I am ready. We can work as a GJN as soon as we receive the authorization to test from the BON; I understand this is usually about 3-4 weeks after graduation, which is Saturday Dec 20th.

5) School has 'mock' NCLEX this Monday Dec 15th; review course for 4 days in January (pre-paid w/ our tuition and fees). LOTS of review books :-)

6) Member of NSNA, and strongly recommend for all!

John

congrats to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have spoken about my firend Mary who received her MSN last May, Mary is Blind, has pin point vision and can start any IV with one stick, When Mary went up on Stage She and her dog Harlee were both dressed in their Caps and Gowns, and and The Dean Pinned and cowled both of them. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. She is now Teaching.

Our Pinning is on December 17th. Our dress code is semi-formal, meaning no jeans or khaki's. Thank God we don't have to wear the "whites"

I have accepted a position as a graduate nurse on an Orthopedic floor that I interned on this past summer. I will be working .8 Day/Evening rotation. I start on December 30, if the BON gets my permit to me by then.

I am taking Kaplan starting Jan 8th. Have not joined any professional organizations other then NSNA.

1) when is your pinning ceremony?

my pinning is on friday the 12th at 6pm... 3 days away... i'm so excited... i can't believe its finally over

2) what do y'all have to wear?

we just wear our uniforms. we also voted as a class to wear the nurses caps.. we feel like we deserve it after what we have all gone through.

3) do you have a graduate nurse position already or are you still interviewing? if so, where?

i took a full time night position on the orthopedic floor. i have worked on that floor fo 1 1/2yrs as a pca and love the staff. not sure if that is where i will stay forever or not.

4) for those with a position, when do you start?

well my unit manager wants me to start orientation as soon as my temp license comes in... but i'm going out of town for christams, so it will be the first of january before i actually start.

5) which, if any, nclex review courses are you going to take?

i'm taking a 4day review course from ... and it is next week the 15th-18th. it cost us $315 but the hospital is paying me back plus paying me $15/hr for taking the class which is 32hrs long.

6) will or have you joined any professional organizations?

i'm just a member of nsna now.. but i plan to joing our local chapter arna.. and get certified in orthopedics if i plan to stay there.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

1) When is your pinning ceremony?

We don't really have one. We got our pins today at the graduation luncheon, but not everyone bought one. They just handed them out still in the little pin box.

2) What do y'all have to wear?

For graduation we have to wear white dress uniforms complete with cute little cap. Ugh.

3) Do you have a graduate nurse position already or are you still interviewing? If so, where?

I have a job working on an oncology med-surg floor. I have already been working on that floor as an extern and I really like it.

4) For those with a position, when do you start?

I am in orientation December 15-16, then I start work the week of New Years (orienting to the floor). I'm a bit scattered in my floor orientation though because of classes and additional hospital orientation we have.

5) Which, if any, NCLEX review courses are you going to take?

My employer is paying for the 4 day Kaplan review course, so I am going!

6) Will or have you joined any professional organizations?

I am sure I will join, but not until after I get a few checks in the bank. We are so broke right now!
