No pre-licensure program is completely online. There is ALWAYS a clinical component which must be completed.

You cannot do clinicals online so there is no way for an RN degree to be completely online. I've heard of hybrid degrees but I don't think they are that common...

We have a hybrid program at a CC in Arizona. Theory is mostly online with proctored exams in class, then lab and clinical are done in class and at medical facilities. The previous posters hit it spot on that there is no way to have a complete program online as you have to learn and practice skills and have to have a set amount of clinical time to be eligible for NCLEX.

I agree with the other posters. There is no way to complete an entire RN program online. Your states BON requires that you complete a certain amount of lab hours and clinical hours to be able to sit for the NCLEX. Without that component the program would not meet the requirements set forth by your states BON.

Thank You All...

Not only will you not find an entire program online, but many nursing schools will not take sciences with lab online classes either. They want you to complete those in person. The lab part at least. So many schools have developed hybrid science classes where you do the lecture online and the lab in person. I personally need to do my classes in person. Each state has a certain number of clinical hours you must do to sit for the NCLEX. Those hours can be spent in a facility and in a sim lab doing simulations. Any clinical hours must though be done in person somewhere. Plus the theory classes are not really something you can teach yourself. Pharm is hard enough in person. I couldn't imagine trying to teach it to myself. Would you really want a self taught nurse taking care of you? Not me. I honestly have this vision of someone with books laid all around them trying to teach themselves how to insert an IV or catheter. No way!! That is why they need to be done in person. Who is volunteering for cath placement?

I like and have been very successful in online classes. I did most of my associates degree online. My RN program has some hybrid online (we met 3 times a quarter) classes and they are tough. Much tougher than normal. I can't imagine doing a whole RN program like that. If you find one I would really scrutinize their drop out rate and NCLEX pass rate. Also what kind of options you have to meet with an instructor should you need assistance.

Hey Guys two nurses just informed me of 3 programs they know of... Kaplan does an Nursing Online Program, St Josephs and another program geared only for Health Care workers called.."One day per week RN program " for 12 hours in Toms River New Jersey...Will be researching them all...

I would research the school your going to & not just jump into a school just because you can go once a week. School is a big commitment of time & money. You need to look into their NCLEX pass rates. Do you want to spend money on a school that has poor pass rates?

Kaplan has a BSN completion program online for people who are already RNs, but, AFAIK, their programs for non-nurses that prepare you for nursing licensure are B&M programs.

Since there are a bunch of different "St. Joseph's" colleges and universities, I don't know which program you might be talking about. I do know that St. Joseph's in Maine offers an online program which is, again, a BSN completion program for people who are already nurses.

Have you looked into how long a "one day a week" nursing program is going to take?
