CNA Interview

Hooray! I have a job interview tomorrow for my very first health related job. I'm trying to get hired at a nursing home here in town as a CNA. I put in an application this morning, got called for an interview about an hour later, and had an email from one of my references a little after that letting me know they called her.

Whew, am I ever nervous! I know lots of you already are CNAs..this is new territory for me though! It's going to be kind of like getting paid for clinical.

Any tips you'd like to impart, feel free! Mostly though, I just had to share with people who will understand why this is such a big deal.

Be prepared to be hired on the spot! It sure sounds like they're preparing for that! :)

Just a word of advice on jobs that hire you on the spot..not trying to discourage you but the all the jobs where I got hired on the spot usually had a very high turnover rate and was anxious to fill their spots with a warm body. Good Luck though!

Hey DenaInWyo how did it go?

My interview went OK - I'm not sure how to judge these things it was somewhere between horrible and grand. I guess that's good. I will know next week.

Well yeah, but where I live the nursing homes think you're awesome if you're a certified aid and if you're a nursing student on top of that? Well, you're gold. I agree, prepared to be hired on the spot, but see it as a good thing :)

So, how did the interviews go y'all?

If you're not here... I hope you are out celebrating your new jobs!!

Nesher, it probably went better than you thought. I'm the same way; always convinced there's no way it will happen. Let us know when you find out, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Ahem.

Yup, hired on the spot :) Took me back for the urinalysis/drug test straight from the interview (that was kind of a shock!).

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I'm a nursing student. They're hoping I'll stick around once I get my RN (which remains to be seen, of course, no promises there). The only fly in the ointment is that I just sent off for my liscense on Monday. Here in Wyoming, you're eligible for "certification by deeming" if you've finished the first semester of the ADN program. If you take a CNA course, you have 120 days in which to get your liscense, and can work during that waiting period. In my case, there really was no "end of the course" since I'm still enrolled. The lady in charge over there called the BON to see how it's handled, and we're still waiting to hear back. I'll still be hired, but it will be a matter of waiting to get my liscense before I can start work (I finished the first semester > than 120 days ago). That's a real bummer, because I am Broke. Notice the capital B. I SO hope it works out that I can start, because it's spring break and would be perfect for getting some of my orientation knocked out.

At any rate, I am thrilled! My first health related job! I'm not a waitress!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone..and Nesher, don't forget to let me know..we can compare 'new job' notes!

Deana,

CONGRATUALTIONS!!!!!! I hope the license aspect gets straightened out so you can start you first health related job! SOON...

By the way there are times in the nursing and CNA world that you still feel like a waitress :)

I'll let you know when I hear. Thanks for the supportive words and thoughts...

I have no doubt about that  In fact, at a recent doctor's office clinical (we have to do several "community" clinicals) I caught myself right before I saying "Will this be okay for you?" while putting a pt in a room.

The difference, I hope, is that when they get nasty with you, it will be because they are ill/stressed, not because you forgot to put a lemon in their ice water.
