 Im in my second year of nursing school and we have a heck of alot of rotations. This one Im on now is called "Senior Health Link" and basically we are doing home health care. I really dont like it because its about an hour away from my house and my car is on it s last leg! Then we have to drive to two patients houses and I don't know the area at all!:( I kept getting lost so much that my teacher came with me today and we both became lost going to the last patients house and then what happens in the middle of being lost an hour away from my house? Wellllll........my damn muffler fell out of my car in the middle of nowhere with my teacher in my car!! To make a really long story short, the car was towed, and now I am carless. The problem is now I dont have a car to finish the rest of the rotation so the school is making me do a report which is required if you miss any clinical rotations. The clinical instructor picks the subject and she wants me to make an audio tape on Guided Imagerty, palliative care, etc. She wants me to talk on the tape and teach a little about it then purchase a guided imagery tape and copy it onto the tape Im talking on then talk more about it at the end. Can anyone give me any ideas on this and how to do it or just tell me everything you know about it so I can steal your ideas! HAHAHAH! I know its really not a difficult subject but how much can you say on a 60 minute audio tape! :imbar Plus she is using my tape to teach other students about guided imagery so it really has to be good! I really love my teacher so I want to do well for her........anyone out there that can help? Thanks so much guys!!

Get in touch with your local childbirth education provider. They should be able to at least get you started. Years ago I read a book "Childbirth Without Fear" don't remember the author, but it was all about how to use relaxation and guided imagery. You could try putting soothing music, you know like the rain fall and wind chimes CD that is in every drug store, behind your narrative, sets the mood. Good Luck.

We had a prof that did some guided imagery with our class... and after it was done she scared us all - made us jump out of our seats!!!

You could find a guided imagery thing to read also (take up time on the tape).

In a clinical setting, begin by establishing a therapeutic relationship with the client to be guided. On the tape you'll need to do this by explaining who you are and why you are creating the tape. Speak in a normal tone and cadence with your voice. Establishing trust and compliance is paramount to achieving the desired effect.

Instruct the subject to attain a comfortable position and close their eyes. Ask them to be in a quiet preferably darkened environment where they will be undisturbed for the duration of the session.

Now you can begin the induction phase of your mental imagery. This is where the subject is instructed to focus thoughts in the pattern suggested by the inductor, you.

In a soft tone and in a slow cadence( the quality of your speech is a very important factor in mental imagery). Ask the subject to picture, in their minds eye, a park having a large field by a lake with a large Oak tree near it.

Tell the subject to picture them self run through the field toward the tree. "Running and running until they finally reach the trunk of the tree. Exhausted, they fall down without injuring themselves laying on their back.

They look up into the tree and see the sunlight gleaming off the leaves. They feel the warm breeze against their face. Continue to focus the subject's attention toward things that involve focusing the senses on the image in their minds eye. They should now be completely relaxed.

This compliance with your guidance allows the subject to become dependent on your guidance and rely on it to direct the images and experience they are creating.

Once your subject has reached this level of focus and relaxation you are able to present the desired effect of the session. Pain relief or decreasing anxiety are frequently the desired effects.

Although this is only a small part of the complex practice of mental imagery it should give you a basis to make a tape and perhaps even achieve an acceptable grade on the assignment.

Let me know how you did on the assignment!

I hate to add to the grief you're already dealing with but you need to be aware that if you copy the tape you buy onto a tape you are making, and that tape is used by someone else, you are both in violation of copyright law. So, pleae don't just duplicate the guided imagery from one tape to another.

Go to the library and talk with the reference librarian. Let him or her know what you're trying to do. There are a lot of resources for guided imagery outside of nursing. Some can be quite long, 15-20 minutes, depending on what the goal of the particular imagery happens to be.

You might want to see what resourcesa are available close to you in hospice and palliative care. Is there a Wellness center. An AIDS service center might have resources you could draw upon as well.

You have a project that could be far more interesting and valuable to you than isolated home visits.

You can also find scripts for guided imagery on the internet by using a search engine such as google.com.

Donna Wong has some good guided imagry stuff, we use it in Peds. She has a website and it may be on there- not sure. I know there is info on http://www.edu.org/PainLink. I got stuff there when I started a Pediatric Pain Resource manuel for the Pedi nurses to use. Pediatric Nursing had several articles on the subject a few years ago that were good.

You might also want to look at some Bernie Seigel stuff. On his books on tape, he does some really good stuff. He works with cancer patients, but they are great.
