any tips to study med surg? those critical thinking tests are really tricky or sometimes i think they make it tricky so few people can graduate. i know most of them are common sense but some of the questions are just ridiculous and they're not of highest priority.

I am in the same boat! After carrying an A- average for the first year of nursing school I have really stumbled in my med-surg psych. I got an 80 on the psych half of my test and I feel like I probably failed the med-surg half of my test. I am probably about to go on acedemic probation for the first time in my life. (My lowest grade ever was a B+ before this!) I wish I could help you with study ideas, but mine didn't work for me either. There is soo much to study (we just did shock,perioperative and fluid and electrolytes) it is hard to even guess what to study. I am going to try doing NCLEX review questions for my next section (endocrine) and pray it works better than just reading the text and going over the notes! We also have a study guide with our book I guess I will have to spend the $$$ and get it. Maybe you could try these things as well.

I know I am not much help, but just remember that no matter what you get, as long as you pass, you are still and RN. (I am still trying to convince myself of this as well, maybe if I write it 100 times!) I have yet to see a nurse with a badge that lists her grades!

Our instructors suggested that we purchase the book "Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students". This book has been wonderful for me. Depending on how your school tests, it really teaches you how to "crack" a multiple choice question, even if you don't know the answer. Also I find that "study groups" are invaluable. There are only three in my group, but we exchange lecture notes, split up our chapter objectives, etc. I also tape my lectures and make flashcards for vocabulary words. Maybe you just had a case of test anxiety? It happens to everyone at some time or another - don't give up! Talk to your instructors too - maybe they can offer advice, help, or where to get tutoring if you need it.:)

Oh! Med-Surg is a killer, but it can be done! Now you know what the tests are like, so you can study more efficiently for them.

"test success" i will check this book out, thanks for the tip. in my nclex-rn book, it also gives 20 steps for nursing students to take test.

Hi,

Do you have an NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN book? I have to recommend it because it has helped me out so much with my studying. It has board style practice questions with answers and rationales for it. I don't know if it has helped others think more critically, but for me, I believe it has. Good luck.

We all know how you feel. Im in my last year and Im just starting to figure out how things work in this nursing school psychotic state we live in! Please Please Pleaseeeeeeeee listen to this advice I give you......BUY 3 NCLEX BOOKS.....when you have a test on psych, open up those books and do every darn psych question they have for you....when you learn respiratory...do the same thing.....do it for every subject you will be tested on. I started doing this second semester and my grades rose DRAMATICALLY!! You can study all you want and know it like the back of your hand and then you read those darn answers on the test and you're thinking...."WHOOOOHHHH....they messed up! Theres 2 right answers on here!" Nope, its not the case. There might be 2 right answers, but only one right answer for the situation presented. The NCLEX books help you attack tests with confidence and really bring an understanding to things. Its also been proven that if you do 5,000 NCLEX questions in nursing school you have an 80% better chance of passing the state boards. I also recommend the book "Test Success for beginning nursing students" as another person has....its an excellent book. Best of luck! Were all here for you!

thanks for all your help.... right now i have my ups and downs, well, mostly downs but im trying to stay positive. I believe that only my faith will sustain me in these trying times.

that is kinda neat that the NCLEX books/CD really do assist in teaching to understand/choose the correct answer ! I like that !:) I just purchased the Saunders and it's Great !:) :cool:
