Hey everyone, I just wanted to get a thread started for all of the BHC/MVC students; please help me get a support system going here. I am starting at BHC in Jan. 07 and would love to make... Read More

    Connie,

I noticed you took Chem online at NL. I'm thinking of doing the same. How was it? Do you recommend it?

    Thanks~

Hi. Yes, if you have some peace and a place to do experiments at home! They were actually the fun part though. I had to wait until really late when my kids(I have 5) were in bed to perform them. The lecture part wasn't bad, read chapters with assignments on ecampus. The tests were in the testing center. I could take them at Brookhaven's testing center, I just said I was taking a 'cross campus test' from NL. This is one of the classes I most feared as far as the pre-req's go.(chem, a&p, and Micro.) and it really wasn't bad! My professor was P.Thompson and she was pretty good about responding to email when I needed help.

I had Dr. S, too and she was amazing! One of my favorite teachers If you decide to take chem at BHC, I had Dr. Bambrough and she is great. She made it really simple and fun.
Hey 3rd semester students...our choices for clinical instructors this summer are McClelland, Shamblin, Routh and Myer(s). I had Adair this semester, so any info you can share on any of the gthers would be great. I'm trying to decide who to pick. Thanks!

I've never heard of Shamblin, they must be new, but I've had Mrs McLelland and Dr. Meyer and they are both awesome, very laid back and knowledgeable. What are your clinical locations?

the rumor mill says big baylor, MCP and med city. But we don't know for sure. We're going to register next week, so we'll find out for sure then. I'm leaning towards meyer...he helped w/ a check off and seemed pretty cool-but I wasn't sure if that was how he was at the hospital as well.

I had Dr. Meyer as my instructor this semester for our preceptorship, so I can't tell you much about how he would be at the hospital, because I don't know. The preceptorship is totally different than a normal clinical rotation, in that you are assigned to your preceptor, and they monitor you. The instructors stop by every now and then to see how you're doing. I saw Dr. Meyer a total of 3 times (out of 15) and for only like 5 mins at a time. But at those times he was cool. I did get higher grades on my care plans with Mrs. McLleland, than Meyer, either he is a tougher grader, or I did a poorer job. Either way it wasn't bad.
So are ya'll doing psych next semester, or a you doing it in the Fall sense the summer is shorter?

we're doing med surg this summer...1st half of summer is skills and lecture and the last half is clinicals. We will have ob, peds and psych in the fall (I think 5 weeks each, right?). Yay! I can't believe our 1st semester is almost over...any you're almost done

I know, I can't believe it's almost over, time flies fast!
Wow, that sounds like it will be intense for lecture in half a summer semester, as that is alot of material, but you will do fine. That's how our 1st semester was.

    wannab,

Not sure if it helps, but I had Routh for end of life issues, and loved her. She is very easy to get along with, understanding, and had a calming effect on my nerves.

I love Mrs. Routh But, I know she's super hard on her clinical group...I think she's made them each cry at least once this semester. I know that it's for our own good and she's just setting us up for success, but I don't know if I am strong enough to handle her in the hospital. I guess I'm a bit scared of her I think once I have more experience under my belt and more knowledge I would like to work w/ her, but I am so afraid of disappointing her. She's one of those teachers that you want to be proud of you. Hope that makes sense.

It makes sense, and I hadn't heard that. I don't know much about what to expect with clinicals. I'm glad I've found this board to get some tips. I'm not sure I'm strong enough either:zzzzz Actually, it seems like I've been through so much just to get through all the pre-req's and support courses and HESI, that when I hear all the horror stories people post I get a bit discouraged!

oh, please don't think she's horrible! She's a great instructor...I'm just a bit soft and need encouragement and nurturing. I have LOVED my current clinical instructor and the skills lab coordinator is awesome But because I know how sensitive I can be I want to do my research and pick a teacher that I think would be compatible with me. I just feel like I'll have enough of someone yellin' at me when I'm in the workforce, so why subject myself to it now.

Oh, I absolutely agree with you! May I ask who your current instr. is?
    Thanks!
