All I can say about this book is WONDERFUL. EVERY EVERY EVERY nursing student, CNA, heck anyone having patient contact should HAVE to read this book.

We have to read and do a book report on this book. I read it in 1 day and am amazed at the feelings it brought to me.

For those of you not aware of this book it is about a woman, Susan Baier, who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome. It is a look at the world of medical care through her eyes. It is SO moving and so frustrating and so incredibly sad.

I was just curious how many of you have read or have to read this book? I also wanted to encourage those of you who don't have to read it, to read it. It will change you!

I first read this as a condensed book in Reader's Digest, and then the complete book a few years later.

It's a reminder that serious illness can strike anyone at any time.

I was just thinking about this book...I'm on my second try at nursing school (LPN, because the RN program I started has a 5-year wait to get back in) and was looking for something unrelated in my old notebooks this week. I found my book report on Bed Number Ten and was thinking I should re-read it. I remember thinking, about some of the things in the book, "Wow, that's really stupid," like when her daughter was all upset because the Cotillion (sp?) Ball was going to be a country/western dance this year...how many people here can relate to that sort of problem? Or can pay for private duty nurses when they move from ICU to the med/surg floor? If it had been someone in my family dealing with that illness, we'd have been in foreclosure and doing the 'couch tour' of relatives' homes by the third month. Anyway, it makes you think differently about patient care, and how little things like a back rub can make a big difference.

I normally don't like to be told What I have to read, except the obvious textbooks. When I started this I just really couldn't and didn't want to put this down.
