Are there any Oklahoma students on board?!

I was wondering if anyone from Oklahoma is on this board, and if so, where you attend nursing school. :p

Since I do have children I chose to give up working part time to go to school full time. I need to go full time so I can get my full grant amount which is helping pay the bills while I'm in school.

My mom said to me not to long ago that if I would of went to college straight out of highschool I would of been working with a degree by now. But I look at it like this, I got to live my life, learn some life lessons and now that I am older(not that old, I'll be 23 in a few days but graduated at 17) and much wiser I can be serious about school. If I would of went to school straight from high school who knows how bad my GPA would of been.

Looks like you guys are in OKC. I live really close to Rose in Midwest City. Marilyn, I'm wondering why you chose to go to Rose instead of OCCC since you live on the southside. A person in my dev. psych. class told me that they have a better program at OCCC, but I'm not willing to drive across town since Rose is so close.

Do you think Houston is that bad? Well the same person in my dev. psych. class also told me (she's from Houston) that I just have to be careful what part I move to. I'm going to ask her what are the best parts of town to live so I'll know for the future.

It might be a better program, I will have to look into it. I just have never liked OCCC for some reason, I think overall Rose is a better school. But I do need to look into OCCC nusing program since it is literally right across the street from me!!

Anyone in the OCCC Nursing program? How competitve is it to get in? Any info? How do you all know which programs are better? Just word of mouth?

I too was working part time for RGIS but decided to quit and just focus on school full time since I have 2 young kids as well. There is never enough time.

Hey you guys are young, I am 29 and am back in school and serious about it. When I was younger I just had no idea what I wanted to do or any motivation really. Sometimes its better to wait IMO. My husband too is 30 and going back for his bachelors and is doing great. He is actually thinking about maybe going into Respitory at Rose State or OCCC...I heard that pays really well, I have a lot of those students in my Anatomy Class at Rose.

Cynthiann yes I am taking Anatomy with Lab, not A&P, and then I will need to take Physiology with Lab next semester or whevenever. I am taking it with Dr Jacobs. I had a test last tuesday and it was VERY hard and I knew everything!! The written tests are hard, it really surprised me sinceI normall make all As and Bs :( I am kinda somewhat worried about this class right now, Ill get my grade tonight, I will be glad if I get a C. I will let you all know. I have heard Bassett is good to take for Anatomy (he is days only or I would have took him) he is supposed to be really freaky and psycho but apparently his class is a LOT easier than the other professors up there.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to answer your question earlier about getting into the nursing program at Rose. They do a point system where you can get up to 60 points for your compass score, up to 40 for your GPA and anywhere from 2-10 points for classes completed and healthcare experience. At this moment I have 104 points. When I went to the meeting they had last semester to be able to talk to the directors of the program, they said last year's cut off was at 105. I'm just a few points short on one part of my compass test, so if I can retake it and get the maximum points I'll have 108 points. I'm hoping that's enough to make the cut.

I hear that as long as a program is accredited it doesn't matter. But the girl in my class said that where she works (Mercy) it seems like the nurses from OCCC are better than the ones who graduate from Rose.

I was looking into the Respiratory program too until I heard a lot of bad things about the profession. Mainly that pay is not as good as a nurse, there is no opportunities for advancement, it's hard to get a decent schedule (I heard mostly nights with mandatory rotating weekends) and the hospitals expect RTs to be able multitask as in doing two jobs such as a CNA's. All those reasons really scared me about the profession.

How old are your kids?

My kids are 4 (she will be 5 in April though) and 14 months.

Oh yuck, Respiratory sounds crappy...lol I'll have to tell him that then.

But I really like Rose State overall. How often can you take the Compass test do you know? I have no clue how many points I have, I need to find out....who do I go talk to?

I was supposed to go to a Health Care deal they had earlier this month to talk to some people but was not able to make it. I really like Rose State though, I just never liked OCCC for some reason. I went there right out of high school and got some Fs (cause I never went to class...lol) so maybe its just bad memories...lol

You can take the Compass test 2 times per semester. You can find the all information to the program here (click on Career Ladder: Beginning Track:

http://www.rose.edu/cstudent/hsdiv/ns_prog/progadv.htm

You can figure out how many points you have from there. For GPA they only count classes that go towards the degree program. So if you made bad grades on a class before I would recommend retaking them.

In case you are wondering, my kids will be 2 & 3 in April.

Check out this thread from a Respiratory Care board that I started last week, here's were I got most of my info from:

Well looks like if I want to go to Rose Nursing all I need is Clinical Microbiology and Nutrition, both of which I can take this summer :) hmm I am taking Anatomy but it says they need A&P so maybe that class as well I might need to take. I'll go talk to someone about it and take another COMPASS test next week as well.

Good thing you asked about Respitory, geez they all sound thrilled to be working as one, how sad to have a job they seem to hate so much. Makes you wonder if they take good care of their patients with attidudes like that ya know?

Its hard going to school with kids dont you think? The only time I have to study is after they are bed. I take classes on Tues and Thurs nights as well. My Developmental Psych (King) and Art are both internet classes as well. My Math and Anatomy are at campus.

Marilyn,

I agree with you about being older and having more direction. I felt SO old going back to school, because I was comparing myself with everyone that's like 18 or 19. I would've FAILED miserably at that age! I had NO IDEA what I wanted to do and I had NO discipline or motivation to be able to follow through on my goals.

I will remember Bassetts name when I sign up for Anatomy.

I would like to move out of OK as well when I finish school. My hubby has allergies most of the year.... and there is a certain degree of prejudism here since this state is not diversified as other states.

I have to agree with you about the diversity. There is quite a bit of prejudice here. One of the reasons I LOVE Florida is because of the diversity; you get to see different kinds of people, different complexions. Dallas is another very diverse place so is Houston.

asiancutie, if you don't mind me asking, what nationality are you since you were referring to prejudism. I am half Filipino myself but I guess since I am half white I don't get much prejudism towards me. You know something weird, since I moved from Florida I don't see as much prejudice. Well, when I do see it it's coming from the older generation. But people in our age range seem to be more accepting towards other races. Back in Florida, most people only hangout with people of their race. I rarely saw interracial relationships, I actually see it much more here in OK.

Marilyn, it is very hard to go to school with kids. There are many times where I feel like giving up because the kids get me so fustrated. It would be easier if I had family around so I could get a break once in a while.
