Okey guys i am posting this here to see if i can get some feedback from people who have actually used the text or are in the process of so doing.

We are being required to buy the APA Manual for our pharm class and needed to know from those who have taken the class if it was a need. How much use of it did you have? Was it required for your class?:typing

I'm not taking your class, but there are tons of APA referencing guides and manuals available online.

You will likely need it for future classes as well. Mine is well thumbed, highlighted and paperclipped. I am in graduate school, but the community college I teach at requires APA for their papers for the ADN students as well. Are you taking prereqs for pharmacy? I'd check with your nursing college secretary, or some of the senior nursing students about how often you'll need it in the future.

I also bought the APA PERRLA on line, and type my papers into it. If nothing else, the reference formatting pays for itself. When my harddrive crashed, I downloaded it all over again for free.

Try for a used copy on Amazon or ebay, or there are a lot of used college book sites.

they told us to buy it too and I did not, instead utilizing google results for APA for three semesters now. never was knocked down for APA styling. PS if you have the new version of MS word (07) it comes with a reference tool that I always use. It's pretty nifty.

Thanks everybody for responding. i was rethinking my decision to spend about $30 at Barnes and noble and will definitely be returning the text. i was on amazon and know i can get a cheap one there.

Make sure you have the lastest APA book if y our buying one

I wouldn't worry about it...just go to the library and use an APA book there...or an english teacher might let you borrow one like at my school...I wouldn't bother buying it...but my school also doesn't require it.

Get used to APA style in nursing school. Please do worry about it,like it or not we use APA style. Both in undergrad school and in grad school they emphasized APA style. I had to do a 90 page thesis paper APA style.

so please go and buy the most recent APA book, you will find it to be a most valuable resource

Take care to note that APA format is a huge part of preparing professional papers throughout your nursing education. The higher you go, the more it's embedded in your work. I've written hundreds of papers now using APA format and am still learning. In graduate school APA is a way of life. Professors at the doctorate level have APA pretty much memorized and make you feel the pain when you make an APA error.

Depending on your needs I'd recommend geting some APA software like PERRLA. After a while, you will no longer need it as a crutch. http://www.perrla.com/Pages/1/2.aspx

For upper division BSN and throughout grad school where APA format errors could cost half of your grade I'd consider hooking up with a professional APA proofer. Kind of pricy at $8 per page, but when your grade is on the line, it's good to have a pro on your side. Here's who I use http://dissertationprofessor.com/

Does your school libarary have a subscription to Noodletools? It doesn't replace the APA manual, but I find that it helps me when I'm confused about what to do. The Purdue Owl website is good as well.
