Anyone have anything positive to say about nursing school?

Besides the outcome at the end; becoming an RN, is there anything positive you've experienced throughout nursing school? I've read so many negative things (and for a person starting her first semester Tuesday, it's not always a good thing to read all of the negative things, though some are reality and help prepare and know what to expect).

So what are some things you liked/loved about nursing school? Anything?!? LOL

I love:

the other students

the content - fascinating!

the patients

some of the instructors

I do not love:

2 of the instructors

the agony of the written assignments (although I learned a lot from doing them)

I love more about it than not!

Uhhh, yeah. If not for Nursing School, I might be an auto mechanic like my old man. I doubt he ever made more than $20K in 2010 dollars and his hands were always black from grime.

Nursing School is what U make of it! Every challenge, every negative experience, & etc. only makes U stronger, & you should learn from it. Some students I am sorry to say, want to be spoon fed, & want to blame others for all their problems. NS was like no other classes I had ever been in, but I loved it. It's hard, it's challenging, but U will be the better person for it, after you have graduated. Take it with a grain of salt, & each challenge as a learning experince. Once U are out there working as an RN, the negative times will make U a better person & Nurse!!! Go For It !!!

During my first semester I really thought that I did not want to go any further, I was really frustrated and not used to being so committed to something that it overwhelmed me at first, but then when I actually got to go to clinical it all started coming together and that's when I realized I really wanted to do this. I really like going to clinical the most and this semester is about everything I really wanted to specialize in (OB, peds not sure what one yet) I really enjoy the lectures now too!

I am a first year nursing student, in my 2nd term and I am LOVING IT! It is the hardest thing I have ever done, but also the most rewarding.

I don't know what kind of negative feedback you are getting but here is what I can tell you...

Nursing school requires 300% of your time. On average we are assigned 13 chapters of reading each week along with clinical time and lab time. Put that all together with class time and you will be spending more time on nursing school than a full time job. You can forget having a social life...most of your time will be spent studying...and when you aren't staying up late to study then you will be sleeping.

Clinical days can be stressful, especially when you are asked to do something you have not done before. But you have to do the skills in order to learn them. The staff at your clinical site will really determine if your day will be a good one or a bad one. If you come across RN's that don't want to coach you...just turn on some charm and you'll probably get them to soften up. Don't be intimidated by the Dr's....the older ones are usually arrogant...at least that has been my experience.

But nursing is not just your average everyday career choice. It takes lots of knowledge and critical thinking...these things require that you dedicate your life to school and make everything else 2nd on your list of priorities.

It takes a special kind of person to make it through nursing school. My class has already lost 2 students. Be strong and remember to take care of yourself too. The best advice I can give is form a study group and a peer group. But whatever you do...don't let someone's negative experience scare you off.

Good luck to you!

Nursing is crazy, it is intense, it is hard, it is down right REWARDING! I miss it like crazy, and you can call me crazy, but I never got bored and there was something always to learn. Now I had some bad times, but that is behind me. I love med/surg and that is where I cut my teeth. I need a little slower pace job nowthat I am older, but I love the night shift. Morning person I am not. Nights are where you can laugh some, and go for a pee break, but I miss Med/surg.

One of the best things for me has been the change in myself. First of all, I have become much more dicsiplined and organized, and that aspect has had a very positive effect in other areas of my life. Secondly, (and probably most importantly) I have always had a pretty low self-esteem...but now that I am nearing the end of my nursing program, and getting ready to graduate soon...my self-esteem has sky-rocketed! I am a much more happy and confident person and feel such a great sense of accomplishment! It's been an amazing experience!!!

Listen alot of people go into nursing and have no business in nursing. They will tell you awful things. Nursing is a very unique career that allows thousands of options. Is it easy..no....and yes the end result is a job basically anywhere you want at the moment...so it is rewarding. But nursing school isnt high school. Although it isnt as intensive as medical school, most programs are very demanding. However, if you realize this beforehand and prepare yourself you wont regret it. Some of it is fun...some is awful. Im not sure what people expect before they go into nursing...but it is after all...nursing. Its not just a desk job. You will undoubtedlly become very close to several people in your class and you will help eachother through. Definetely stick with it. If you dont like it leave. Try to find an area that you enjoy and head in that direction..good luck.
