"Just because you are book smart doesn't mean you'll be a good nurse."

I HATE it when people say this to me!!!!! I am well aware that there is more to being a nurse than being "book smart." Having worked as a CNA and Home Care Aide for 12 years, I DO have more to offer than just "book smarts." However, the book smarts are what will get me into nursing school. Also, if one isn't able to pass the classes, one will never get the chance to take and pass the NCLEX and actually BE a good nurse!

The attitude I have gotten from nurses I know as well as other students seems to imply that because I AM book smart, I will NOT be a good nurse. I resent this.

BTW, I do not brag about my grades. The reason so many in my community know I have a 4.0 is because the President's and Dean's Lists are read on the radio and printed in every little newspaper here.

Yes, I've heard it, too. Not all of the ones who have said it to me have been nurses and a few have even been nursing students themselves and not yet nurses. Coming from them I can't help but wonder if it is a bit of sour grapes. Coming from some of the nurses, it may be the same.

I have been wisely advised that no one will care about your GPA after you're a nurse. Kind of helps me keep things in perspective, especially if I am stressing out too much and need to just chill. The expectations I have for myself are high and I am harder on myself than anyone else is.

That said, I think being "book smart" does not exclude anyone from being a darn fine nurse. ;)

I was told this by 3 ppl in my class. Ironically, they didn't come back this year.

What EVER! Perhaps they had other things going on in their lives?? I'm sure it's not just because they didn't receive a 4.0 like you.

Perhaps they decided to go on for their RN instead? :rotfl:

umm ok....

hoppermom..

I think it has to do with sour grapes as well and I think it sucks that your deans list is posted...what ever happened to privacy?

Good luck to you! Not only will you be a smart nurse, but due to your 12 years as an aide, I bet you'll be a good nurse too.

JEN, I don't really find anything funny about that. I certainly don't look down my nose at anyone who is going for their LPN just because I am going for an RN. We all share in the responsibilty of caring for patients, each with a vital role.

Please tell me I have misunderstood your intentions here.

If this was supposed to be a joke, I think it was certainly in poor taste. :(

Anyway, they publish the Deans/Presidents list in the paper here too! Go figure...

No one's ever said anything like that to me.

Sounds like sour grapes to me too.

If someone DARED say something like that to me: "Just because you are book smart doesn't mean you'll be a good nurse." I'd probably respond: "Yeah, but it won't hurt" and blow it off. I don't have time for nay-sayers.

I actually had an instructor say that to our class. She told us that her C students usually are better nurses than her A students. What a bunch of bull. Just prove them wrong and become the best nurse you can be!!!

Everyone that thought my joke was "bad taste" needs to just get over youselves!! I thought it was insulting that she just assumed that because some people didn't show up the next semester was because they didn't get a 4.0! Give me a break and take a pill.

:(

You guys are just LOOKING for reasons to slam me now.

And, NEVER have I said that I would EVER look down my nose at someone for going for an LPN instead of BSN! I was simply AFFENDED because the poster insinuated that because a few people didn't attend the next semester of her program they didn't receive a 4.0 like she did. There are countless reasons why someone might have to end a program as you should KNOW!

This is a big myth, actually. What if you work in ICU and decide to become a nurse anesthetist? You must have a 3.0, usually much better, to get into those programs.

You never know what might happen down the road. If people decide to get more training grades can, in fact, matter.
