So next semester in my BSN program is mental health and Research. I don't know what to expect, any helpful websites you guys know of? Anything that helped you to survive? My teacher gave a heads up that we need to be real familiar with APA format, and I hate APA format!! Any other advice?:***:

I hate to say it, suck it up and learn APA. Its hideous, tedious and really annoying. Its also something that can potentially lead to you failing an assignment if done wrong

APA Referencing Style Guide - Waikato University Library is a really good resource

Mental health foundation

Also google mental health and research in your area. Look at is as beginning in research  there is alot of stuff out there, bearing in mind that anyone who can pay for a website can say anything they like, websites ending in .edu .ac.nz are a fairly safe bet.

Helpful hint though, dont use wikipedia, or an only dictionary as reference. It really annoys most nursing tutors

This is the APA resource we were given: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Hopefully your teachers will be wonderful for those classes! Research can be very interesting with the right instructor.

Thank you guys! I'm really excited, I just want to make sure I'm using credible resources. My teacher that taught Pathophysiology is teaching the Research class, so this should be pretty interesting. We also have a Mental Health clinical and Adult Health clinical that I'm excited about :) How was your personal experience on those rotations?

The more you practice writing papers in APA, the better you will become. Anyway, if you plan on getting your master's, start now because APA will never leave. (I personally despise APA.)

When I took Mental Health, therapeutic communication and medications was a big deal. From the first exam to the final, those were 2 huge topics. Familiarize yourself talking to patients with mental illness (the textbook usually has a guide) and make charts for the medications.

One piece of advice for mental health clinical: never enter a patient's room by yourself. :nono:

Purdue owl is awesome. I took English Comp last fall and my professor told all of us to write our papers in the format for what our majors were. Some did MLA and some APA. So all of mine were done in APA. I think I wrote 8 papers for that class so I am now familiar with APA. I used Purdue owl a lot. It was a huge help.

Couldn't agree more -- just finished both of these classes myself and found mental health to be a challenge....it is a whole different nursing world... but you must pay attention to communication..

Microsoft Word can be your friend with APA format concerning your references and citing material. Get to know the program and how to use it and always refer back to the APA websites already mentioned. Good luck.

Thanks sooo much everyone! I will definitely take your advice :) I plan to go back to school for my DNP part time after a years experience Med Surg. So maybe I should familiarize myself with APA lol I'll keep it all in mind

Purdue owl and for research, look up NCLEX nursing research questions on the internet. That saved me for our two exams! I had the toughest teacher in the program, so I passed with getting help early and often on the research papers. With mental health the DSM is very helpful.
