**2015** Compressed Nursing Programs Hopefuls

Hello everyone!

Its that time of year again, and I'm already gearing up for compressed nursing applications! I figured I'd get the ball rolling so that we can all shed a little light on admissions/GPA/supplementary information we each find out, and to ask questions, to help each other through this stressful process!

I am a Kin Grad from UW, and will be applying to Western, McMaster, York, Trent and Queens accelerated nursing programs. I've enrolled as a post-grad at UW this year to pick up some pre-req's such as microbiology and philosophy for York, and a 0.5 credit psych course.

Last year I applied late March to Trent (it was the only application still open), and was accepted. However, I decided to wait another year and see if I can go to school closer to home (Waterloo). My cGPA is 76%, and last two years is 88% (this will be more helpful for comparisons once admissions decisions come around!)

So far I have learned:

- avoid taking the York microbiology course offered online - apparently it is confusing and terribly hard

- 6.0 credits and 3.0 credits are equivalent to 1.0 and 0.5 credits, respectively

- make sure you take biology 230 and 235 through Athabasca to really, really, really cover your bases (noted on the 2014 second-entry forum)

- use this chart to calculate your cGPA/GPA by equating EACH grade you have earned to the 4.0 scale, then finding the average

I'm wondering:

- what is your cGPA/GPA (not necessary, though)

- where your applying, and why

- favourite schools

- your potential supplementary application details

- what are your concerns, or questions?

Let's help each other out in the spirit of nursing!

Good luck to everyone, and hopefully I'll see you in class one day!

Hey there Meloh,

I too am in the spirit already! Thanks for getting this thread started!

I am a mature student and it's actually my very first time applying to nursing. Complete newbie!

I did an undergrad in KIN at UBC and graduated in 2010. My cGPA at UBC is 79.7%

I am in the midst right now of taking my second degree at TRU. So far I have an A- average there and will probably have an A in my last year? I am going to be finished in December - so I can update that when I know!

I am applying to UOT and Western. Specifically because they are close and my partner would be able to live and work there as well. (I don't have the appropriate pre-reqs for York and I figured I would try the others first before spending $$ on more courses!)

Supplemental Application: child life volunteering at hospitals, children grief counselling, 5 years of clinical research (I was both an assistant and coordinator), resident advisor.

I have an odd question - does Western only have OUAC? No supplemental application?

Good luck :)

Thanks for the advice!

Hey jesibear!

I'm glad someone found my thread!

I'm 99.999% sure that Western is simply marks based entry with no supplemental applications. I had called in a while back and I guess last years average GPA was 82-83%-ish.

Would you consider applying to McMaster? Seems like it would be in the right area for you?

Hey,

I completed my Hons. B.Sc. @ the university of toronto this summer. My cGPA is not the greatest sitting at 2.81 (72%) :( because I didn't do well in my first two years, however my last 10 credits (2 years), I have a GPA of 3.71 or 82.5%. I already applied to western, humber and queens. I know I have very little chances of getting into queens as they look at your cumulative GPA. However I am really hoping to get into western. I also might consider applying to nipissingU as they also only look at your last ten credits.

How are my chances looking?

I'm kind of nervous and anxious about the applications because I know how competitive these programs are... Any advice from current 2-year BScN students would be great!

Hello! I'm applying to Queens ABSN program, I'm just in the process of finishing up a few prerequisites this semester and plan to submit my application before Christmas. This is the only program that I am applying to - as I live here in Charlotte and am not planning on leaving due to family commitments here. I have two bachelor degrees from Appalachian State. My current cumulative GPA is 3.607 and prerequisite GPA is a 4.00. Hopefully it won't vary much with my remaining prerequisites (I have Human Anatomy & Physiology II, Microbiology and Nutrition in progress).

I am a little worried that Queens is the only school I am applying to, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that my GPA is good enough. If I don't make it into the ABSN program, I plan to apply to the 2 year BSN program.

Statistics:

- Currently a 4th year student at UWO

- Cumulative average: 71%:( (did not do well first two years WHATSOEVER)

- Last 10.0 Credits: 77%

- Last 5.0 Credits: 86%

Applying to:

- Trent (compressed)

- Lakehead (compressed)

- Laurentian (compressed)

I had originally planned on taking courses throughout the summer/ first semester of next year to up my averages and apply to compressed nursing programs during the fall of 2015 (next fall). But what the hell, might as well give it a shot.

Hi Meloh,

I'm sorry about the million questions i'm about to post, BUT:

Wow, you applied late to Trent last year! I was under the impression that if you didn't apply by the February deadline you would have no choice of being considered. Does this mean that they took your 1st semester grades as well as your 2nd semester grades into consideration for your 10.0 courses that they looked at (and did you have an 88% average for your last 10.0 courses?)?

Do you know what the cutoff average for Trent was last year?

When did you receive your Trent acceptance last year (Seeing as you applied in March)?

Hi everyone! I am current U of T student in the second degree nursing program.

I applied last year to Trent, York, U of T, Nipissing, and UBC, and was accepted to all schools, so feel free ask me any questions you might have about any of these specific programs! I completely empathize with all of you right now as I know how stressful it can be waiting to hear back!!

Hi there,

What is the most important thing to focus on UBC and U of T application.

I only have a 3.4 cgpa. I have extensive research experience (paper in revision), i have overseas volunteer experience, worked at tertiary care hospital in a clerical role for 3 years, good community involvement (soccer etc).

For U of T I would focus your research experience and skills as this is something that they really encourage in their students. For UBC I would emphasize your knowledge of social determinants of health and how the work you have done is related to that, or how you would like to explore that.

Also, for U of T they only look at your last year of school and I think there were a few students that got in with a B+ in the last year of their undergrad and definitely students who have a cGPA that is lower than 3.4.

Hope that helps!

Hey Everyone!

I was hoping to get some information on the schools! If there is anyone who knows or have heard anything about the two year programs I have applied to I would greatly appreciate it!

I have applied to: Western, U of T and Queens

I got accepted to Queens last week so I am hoping to hear more about each program so I'm not struggling to pick one later in the year!! (if I get into any more - fingers crossed!)

Thank you!!!

I'm late to the discussion but I've applied to U of T, Western, Queen's, Trent, McMaster and UBC.

I just got accepted to Trent today :) I think Toronto is my first choice, but I'm relieved to know that I'm going somewhere!

I finished my undergrad degree at U of T in April of 2014. have a 3.6 cGPA, 3.9 in my last 2 years. I have volunteer experience working in the day surgery unit, research experience from my undergraduate degree, and lots of athletic-related extracurricular and leadership involvement.
