I am getting quotes for car insurance. One form asked me to put my occupation down. In the first box, you select your field. I picked "Health-Medicine-Funeral" (nice grouping, eh?). There was nothing else even close to what I do. Among choices in the next box for that field, there was CNA, LPN, LVN, and NP (among other non-nursing options). No RN! There was also no choice for "other." After heeing and haing for a bit I just picked NP and kept going, but geez. How could they miss RN?

That's a lot of detail they are asking for car insurance. Why would they need to differentiate a CNA from an LVN or even an RN? I don't think those would introduce a variable that would affect someone's accident risk. I guess insurance companies have their own mysterious reasons for things. If it was a paper copy, I would have drawn a little box with "RN" next to it and checked that. :)

Some companies offer special discounts to certain professional groups, so that is why they are asking. Though I'm really surprised RN is not included in the list... just another instance of RNs being under-appreciated I guess...

actually I used to work for a car insurance company and they said they charge MORE for nurses because they often work long hours and different shifts and could be sleepy on the drive home.

My insurance company would have given us a discount on our auto policy if I was an RN, but because I'm an LPN we did not receive the discount.

Very interesting, and true. I've had some mornings I've definitely felt I had to have the windows cranked down and music blasting to stay awake.

Perhaps they want to sell your info to other companies? Having your specific occupation might be helpful for that purpose.

My insurance company did give me a discount for being an RN . . . I'd ask your agent if they offer a discount.

Knowing just a little about how insurance companies operate, this makes sense.
