Thoughts? Have you come across this in your practice?

In my case its usually an adult whose every test comes back negative but they insist they are dying and the only thing that can save them is more Dilaudid.....(I am aware i'm making a broad generalization with that last statement)

I took care of a little boy whose mother had Munchausen's by proxy. She kept bringing him into our PICU and allowed him to be poked and prodded constantly. He had a central line and she was caught on hidden camera putting something into his IV tubing. We had suspected it, but had to actually catch her in the act. Every time we got him well enough to go home, he would suddenly spike a high temp. Funny, she had a little girl that she did nothing like this to.

We have a patient who is making themselves and their family sick. They are using fecal matter to give themselves UTI/kidney infections. They have multiple providers giving them meds who don't know about each other. They're also doing the munchausen by proxy dance as well by sharing their psych meds for with their young kids.

They're sneaky, though. No one has been able to actually catch them in the act with regards to the munchausen's yet, but they've hopped a couple commands now and repeated the same number.

A girl I knew from high school actually killed her first son (3 months old) after he was in and out of the hospital. Nearly killed her infant daughter 4 years later if not for some smart nurses/doctors who caught on.

As the parent of two kids who really did have cancer (one alive and thriving, the other fallen to his disease at age 13), I find this beyond despicable. I would never, ever, ever be able to retain the kind of objectivity I need to as a nurse in witnessing something like this. Good thing I am not in pediatrics I guess.

Sure sounds like the mother is the one that needs medical help. Glad the boy is not suffering with Cancer.
