Would a class about breast cancer be interesting to most 10th graders?

I have to do an education project for class......having a hard time finding an interested teacher so I thought maybe I didn't pick an appropriate subject for 10th graders!! I had though that I could talk about risk factors, things to start or stop doing to lower your risk, and self-exams, and bring the breast models from our lab and let the students feel the rubber models with lumps in them and the normal ones.

I think something along the lines of risks of body piercings or tattoos would catch the interest of 10th graders; Lou's web site could help on that subject.

Thanks for your support kcwitn. I'm doing ok so far, but bed rest is certainly driving me nuts. I was thinking the same thing about the body piercing/tattooing thing. I LOVE that topic as an educational subject (probably could tell that already from the website, huh....)

I thought you were pulling our leg with this - asking 10th grade boys to feel up breasts --- & to do it right in front of 10th grade girls too. OMG. lol. Well, it might work -- if its an all-girl class. Otherwise they are going to die of embarrassment. Not exactly receptive to learning.

We did that in health class Freshman year, so maybe it is something they've done before (hence the disinterest). Does it have to be a health related topic, or could you do nursing as a career? Some of our school presentations were on that. Very timely, with their age and all.

Do you HAVE to do high schoolers? Our instructor discouraged it because they will eat you alive. I did hygiene to 4th graders, and we had so much fun!!!!!!!

I would say I would nix the breast and testicles thing with 10th graders! I like the STD one. The ethics one you might hit some walls with some parents.

I personally love to work with the elementary kids....I helped our school nurse (have you spoke to the district nurse yet? She may have ideas for you!) and we had the kids draw a face on a piece of paper and then they traced their hand and we gave them a Kleenex and they pasted the hand on the Kleenex and the Kleenex on the nose! :) We also got little samples of Purell and handed them out to the kids.

I think its relevant but if its boys and girls it might be really rough going. I love the idea wash had what a great mind!

I vote for STDs or birth control methods and side effects with each one. Alot of girls know the pill is available but they don't know the side effects and such. Hard group to target.

Kristy, were you the one asking for ideas for your hygeine project a while back? You never told us how it went or what you did!!

;>)

I like the STD idea. After it's over, you bring up the whole 'having sex because of peer pressure' thing- especially if they have a situation occur like this:

Student A: Here, let me give you some water.

Student B: No.

A: Aw, come on...

You see what I'm saying? :>) I think that is a FABULOUS idea. Wish I'd thought of it when I was in school!
