Who loves their job?

Getting ready to wrap up my 1st year of nursing and am looking on the horizon for what I might do next. I've been in med-surg, okay only since June, but still! I have learned a ton but I know I don't want to make my career here. I'm eligible to transfer to a different unit next June so I think it's time to start forging a path now. I really don't want to go out of the frying pan into the fire. I am not afraid of hard work, but I am very weary of the chaos that is med-surg (at least it is on our floor). I can handle lack of predictability, I just would like to move away from 5 patients all on their call lights at the same time :-)

So if you love your nursing job, please post so and tell us what it is about you love! And if you want to be honest about the not-so-great parts, I would love to know about those as well.

I love my job. I work in Preop/PACU and Phase 2 . I work with a bunch of very smart and hardworking people, they make all the different.

I love my job in Home Health. I am currently in Admin (does that make me a turncoat?) but I loved being a field nurse. The best part is being able to focus entirely on one person at a time, and getting to really know your pt & their family/friends/pets.

ER. Love my job. Pace is fast, priorities change in the blink of an eye (or the change in a rhythm), love the autonomy esp with the amount of standing orders we have. Never know what's coming in next - 2 day old to 108 year old and everything in between. Love when you can fix a kid. Medical mysteries are the best. Love it when the docs ask my opinion. Really like most of my co-workers.

Downsides: we don't close. Pts who don't take care of themselves. Some of my co-workers are burnt-out. Frequent fliers who abuse the system. Working every other weekend. Being underpaid.

All in all, the pros far outweigh the cons.

PACU. I love my job too. Very fast paced with occasional downtime until the next round begins. Can be a crazy day and can have emergencies back to back to back to back. Or happening all at once. That's why you have to be EXTREMELY independent and TEAMWORK is so important. Docs have great respect for us because we save patients and acknowledge our importance to the team.

People comes out confused and in severe pain and you can help them feel safe and have pain relief. That's awesome. I have funny co-workers and they are fun.

Downsides: Like the ER, we NEVER close. The patients who don't take care of themselves and wonder why they have to be reintubated. Seriously you are 400 pounds, you smoke, and have uncontrolled DM and wonder why you're having a hard time? Really? I am on call once a month, but that call is HARD WORK and very stressful. Especially when you are recovering super, super, super sick people. Cranis, MVAs, SBOs...100 thousand year olds and the docs who operate...sheesh...*banging head*

I agree with above poster. All in all, the pros outweigh the cons.

Edit to add: No new grads allowed in our area. The one nurse who has the least experience has 5 years under her belt. The most? 35 years of experience. I'm considered one of the "younger" nurses...hehe....

I too, love my job. I wanted ICU, and got it......BUT it's a trauma/burn unit. I NEVER previously thought I could handle something like this, but took a chance. Love, love, love it! I love the dressings, I like the one-on-one, and the total care of the patient. I like my co-workers, I like my manager, I like the docs.

I LOVE my job in NICU. I love getting to see a baby who started out so sick/premature needing every intervention we can offer, then growing bigger, getting stronger, learning how to PO feed and breathe on their own and finally going home. I love getting to go through these stages with the family and all the teaching that comes along with each stage. I love getting updates on how the kids are doing post discharge. I love that we have a great team environemnt, and good patient assignments. I like most everyone I work with. I feel very spoiled to have the job I do. This is my first RN job, it's been 2 years now, and I will be so sad when/if I have to leave. Not sure I could ever work in another area :)

Love my job. Same complaints as above post plus not enough time to get it all done! There is a lot of stress, but at the end of the day I feel I make a difference. Plus, I am constantly being challenged, which is exciting to me and makes me feel like I am growing professionally and personally. Best of all, I get to work around a lot of smart people.

Love my job. Work in clincial research at a University. I already know this is the best job I will ever have. When it ends I am going to be ruined for a real job ever again.....

What is a day like? What about quality of life - what kind of hours, how is the pay? If you wanted to go back to clinical nursing, do you think you'd be able to?

A couple of things to add to my job....like the ER...people don't hang around (some hang around longer than others, but you know eventually they leave...)

Love mine. Work at a kidney practice. I handle two doctors that I respect tremendously, as well as two EPO clinics. We do a lot of clinical trials in our practice and most of our patients are very complex. I also love that I work 5 min from my home and kids school, have great benefits, work mon-fri, no weekends or holidays.

I took this job after working on a tele unit at the hospital (night shift) and it has changed my life. I was so unhappy at my last job, especially with the schedule and the hospital's lack of respect for their employees.

And as a cherry on top, I take home about 30% more in pay each month. :)
