What to say in letter of recognition?

I want to write a letter of recognition for my preceptor and give it to her nurse manager. Ideas of what to say? Do I just address the letter to the NM and write "thank you for opening up your unit to me, a student nurse and that I learned so much because of my preceptor (Name) blah blah blah....." Or does it need to be more formal? I'd like to give my preceptor recognition and to thank the unit and to show my appreciation for the opportunity. I had a really great rotation and it is a unit that only takes on a few students.

(Of course I'd also like to work there but that is not my motivation for the letter :) )

I don't think it needs to be particularly formal, although I'd make sure to be detailed-- explain exactly why your preceptor was so great, whether it was always getting you when an interesting procedure was happening, advocating for you to have challenging patients, supporting you through a difficult patch, etc. That's a really nice thing for you to do and it will make your preceptor's day! :-)

I think it is terrific that you want to thank the unit and your preceptor in this way. More students should do this. It provides the preceptor with recognition that may help her achieve her professional goals if her manager knows that she is a good preceptor, etc.

It doesn't have to be very formal. The ideas you presented in your OP are fine. Say "thank you" to the unit and your preceptor and then give examples of what they did that really helped you.

Great! I just wanted to be sure I was on the right track :)

Dear Manager,

Thank you for the opportunity to do my medicine rotation on Blair 6. Your staff were welcoming and knowledgable. I would particularly like to extend my thanks to my preceptor Jane Smith RN, whose enthusiasm and patience made it possible for me to get the most out the experience. I particularly remember the time when .... and she helped me understand .... .

Please also let me recognize Ann Jones CNA for her kindness to the patients and willingness to help me learn the fine points of patient handling, and Unit Clerk Tracy Roe for patiently helping me master the online ordering system.

The Blair 6 staff make it clear why ABC School of Nursing sends students to Mercy General for clinicals. Thank you again.

Sincerely,
