What time is it? The watch watch...

We've done shoes, uniforms, stethoscopes, pdas but I don't think I've seen a thread on watches.

I have the worst luck with watches. They stop working on me (windup kind), the watchband breaks and it's of a sort that I can't replace the watchband, I lose it because the watchband drove me crazy and I was putting it in my pocket, where it felt out.

I want a watch with the following characteristics:

1. cheap

2. analog

3. preferably, the dial is readable. I can certainly "sight read" watches, but

would rather not. (you know, one with numbers, not tick marks.)

4. The second hand, of course, has to be easily visible

5. I guess the metal stretchbands are preferable, although I have

some tiny patterned lacs from wearing one (?). My favorite, however,

was more like a slightly thick piece of cloth--it was very comfortable.

I have a history of not tolerating watchbands very well, but my last

metal stretch band was okay, even with the lacs.

6. I can use it to count someone's respirations in the dark.

This means those indiglo watches don't work: you have to hold a button

in in order to see the dial and it only lasts a few seconds. I want

something where I can see the numbers...or at least, and most

importantly, see the second hand in the dark.

So if you have favorites, whether from the drugstore or from an online healthcare clothing store--tell me your favorites! Give me some suggestions.

I actually haven't worn a watch with a second hand in the past few years. All of the rooms now have clocks with second hands, at least any place that I have been. I just wear my "regular and favorite" watch, though I do have quite a few with second hands. Hardly wear them anymore.

Unfortunately, when I did my peds rotation we would go into the room, not waking the child, and were supposed to take the child's respirations. Clocks in the room, unless they had luminescent dials, wouldn't have worked and I don't think were there. They were when I rotated in PICU, though.

Actually, come to think of it, I tend to wake up in the middle of the night and like to see what time it is, too.

I am so hard on watches/watch bands that I buy the cheapie ones in the costume jewelry section at walmart. They have a huge selection, and they cost less than 10 bucks, which is less than most replacement bands. It would be a waste of money for me to buy an expensive watch for everyday..I trash them!

Look at the Swiss Army (Victorinox) line of watches.

I have one that I have beat the crap out of, just replaced the battery because it was time. The watch is 4 yrs old and had not had a battery replacement. Mine has a black face, and glows like all get out once the light hits it. Very easy to read in the dark.

yeah, that's where i bought my last one. not very many months ago. i don't think i'm hard on watches; i think the watches i buy are sub-standard.

Thanks for the great suggestion. I have a couple of their knives, one of which I bought in the early 1970s!!!
