question to all you nurses out there. the other morning on the way home from work, i was seized, and i do mean seized, by a severe searing, stabbing unrelentless pain that started somewhere around my left hip and shot down the middle of my thigh. it was so severe, that i, who have undergone a 24 hour labor on pitocin and delivered a 9 plus pound child without benefit either of epidural or analgesia, immediately put on my blinker to pull over, passed out briefly, was disoriented ,diaphoretic and nauseated. i would have preferred th elabor pain.once i recovered i wondered if it was an isolated event, gas or some sort of weird sciatica....happened again yesterday and last night, always when i am seated and last night i fell over to my side in mid chew of whatever i had for dinner. brief disorientation and then recovery....had this sensation been in my chest, i might have thought i was having an mi. now i am scared because i have no warning signs and just the thought that it might happen when i am driving my kids around makes me weak with worry. i know sciatica is a possibility, but in the past few months the only thing physically that has changed is that my normally regular periods are spacing out. i apparently also have a bulky uterus. does anyone know of an occasion where the bulky uterus might be pressing on something to give such a sensation? i feel like a fool but i don't want it chalked up to an overweight getting older nurse. i am not one to complain and pain doesn't usually get to me. this is really very frightening to me and i was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what is going on and /or why? thanks in advance to any of you who might offer some advice, experience or ideas.....

Just because the symptoms are easing doesn't mean we will let you off the hook! We do expect to hear that you went to the doctors appointments and got a "REAL" diagnosis. I am glad the Naprosyn is helping you; I'm allergic to NSAIDS myself.

Take care of yorself now.

I'm glad you are feeling a bit better, but your symptoms do sound serious (not fatal, just serious!). I hope you get a diagnosis that is CORRECT. I spent 1 week in severe pain that my GI said was "upset stomach" from my meds...was actually pancratitis. The ER doc finally believed something was up when his GI cocktail didn't work and my lipases were 10 times normal!!

Keep us posted, please. Take care, and be careful. Maybe take a couple weeks medical leave?

Well, if it IS sciatica, you will be well prepared for the next drug seeker you see who has "back pain." It will be all that you can do not to laugh in their face.

So glad to hear the meds seem to be helping. Why don't you run down to the ER and let them do a urine dip, just for general purposes (or do one on your floor, if you can)?

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. First of all, I'm glad you're feeling better, but please don't be lulled by that. You could be seriously hurt if something like this occurred while driving, or even walking down the stairs! Now that I'm done nagging, I wonder if this could be related to ovulation. I used to get killer ovulation pains. That may explain why it appears to be better now. Also, the possibility of a tubal pregnancy comes to mind, although I would expect that pain to worsen with time. Keep us posted!

Trust me, NO one is nagging. EVERYONE has been helpful. Today I could feel twinges and was absolutely terrified that the pain might come back so, tonight, at work, I WILL email the occupational health nurse, as my husband reminded me that in October I had a work related injury that was diagnosed as sciatica, and during or following my shift, will get myself down to the er to at least get the evaluation started...I take all your ideas and advice to heart and will definitely have to get something done ASAP, not only for my health and peace of mind, but for that of my family ( I am the breadwinner at this point)...I will NOT let this defeat me AN D, unless I get some kind of appropriate diagnosis, I don't know that the powers that be would ALLOW a medical leave..They fight us at every turn, however, I ,as the famous line in Fried Green Tomatoes, "am older and have beter insurance"! Please don't hesitate to offer more advice or ideas. I value them and you much more than I could ever tell you. When the NURSE in the family is scared, people usually pay attention!:)

GET SEEN NOW!!!!! We are praying for you.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted you all to know that I did finally get to see the doc, who thankfully knew I had to hang around after my night shift and fit me in....I have a definite lordosis (sp) sorry-been up way too long to spell check:) Anyway, since I had a work injury in the fall from trying to assist a patient and was diagnosed at that time with sciatica, I apparently have been favoring that side and that can cause the other side to have symptoms, sometimes, as in my case, quite severe. He agreed with several of you that my blackout episodes and periods of disorientation immediately afterwards, were probably vagal responses to the severity of the pain...He scheduled me for an MRI next week and I promise to keep you all updated. Thankyou so much for the support and kindness you all showed toward me..If I could send out real hugs to all of you I would. In the mean time, cyber ones for sure!

Glad you're okay....I mean, sort of...??? Keep us posted!!! :)

Keep us updated, sweetie, those of us who have 'been there' are 'specially concerned...as we all are ! (((HUGS)))

And take care of yourself! If you are the main breadwinner, you NEED to take care of yourself!

Glad to hear things are moving along and some action is being taken by your doc. Hope things work out and your MRI is ok!!

Take care!
