What is a Nurse data specialist?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I found a nursing position dealing more with data collection and abstraction.. I currently work on a cardiac floor but am interested in informatics field. Please describe to me what exactly a nurse data specialist would do.

A little description of the job posting I found.

Position Summary:

Completes chart reviews for highly complex clinical issues. Ensures the accurate and timely transmission of data to a selected vendor to fulfill the TJC/CMS Core measures and other Quality Clinical Metric requirements for Rochester General Health System. Develops systems and processes that will enhance the abstraction and transmission of data as required. Keeps the appropriate administrative and medical staff leaders apprised of the status of the Core measures and other programs. Is involved in both the concurrent review and post discharge abstraction of quality clinical metrics.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

That description seems pretty comprehensive.

I guess what I really wanted to know is what kind of data will I be working with? How a nurse data specialists day goes.. What kind of challenges there are? And what they like or dislike about their job?

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

we have a balanced scorecard that tracks falls, hospital acquired infection (Foley and central lines) pt satisfaction, financials, etc. We do skin audits and submit them. As the diabetes person, I audit BG

Taking raw data, analyzing it and extrapolating it toward trends. I am an Informatics major (just starting) and my first data analytics class is in the fall. i'll have a better idea then :) Right now I am getting ready to start working with students in a Sim lab-teaching how to use out EHR and charting in real time.

Look at QualityNet - Home

Quality Net has all the specs you will need.

Challenges are, that CMS is changing the guidelines and are inflexible. You as a nurse have never been educated that these even exist

What are your computer skills, do you know excel or access.
