It means a woman has been pregnant 9 times. Para 9 would mean she had 9 live births from those 9 pregnancies.

9 pregnancies-it does not say whether they resulted in a viable birth, mis carrige, or abortion! It simple means she has been pregnant 9 times including the one then>

Gravida 9, Para P probably means that your tax dollars are hard at work raising those children (LOL).

The para is how many are living. It will further break down to T-P-A-L for term, premature, abortion(misscariage) and living. So a multi parous women will have a very interesting T-P-A-L!! PS--I, too, resent the tax dollar remark--I am the oldest of 12 and my Mother is an RN--we never depended a day on any assistance from anyone--just another one of those "welfare" misconceptions I've gotten used to. I was asked the other day if we all had the same father!!

I'm sure Level2Trauma meant no harm at his remark. I myself laughed at it. Those of us who work Labor and Delivery see this quite often (grand multiparous women) who live off the system. Sometimes it just takes a little humor for us to get through the day....
No harm intended.
BTW in response to the original question...
yes, gravida 9 means 9 pregnancies - whether they lasted 8 weeks or 40 weeks. Para is live births. So, a gravida 9 para 8 has 9 pregnancies (usually counting the current one) and 8 births.
Well thanks everyone. That makes some of the things I have read on here make a lot more sense. Like one entry one the "what freaks you out" topic.

Sorry, but I resent that remark! I am a mother of 6 (Gravida 6) and no ones "Tax dollars are hard at work raising MY children" except my husband's & mine.
Sorry if I seem snippy, but I deal with this constantly, people automatically ASSUME that cause I have a large family I must be "Living off the system, addicted to drugs, children have 6 different fathers etc"
I know your post wasn't directed at me, but I do take offense. NOT everyone with a lot of children are taking YOUR tax dollars.
