Veteran and Military Nurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I went up to WalMart this afternoon to pick up a prescription. Out front, like every Veteran's Day, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) was selling Buddy Poppies. I always stop and buy one in honor of my Dad who fought in WWII and a grandfather who fought in WWI.

One of my bestest friends was a nurse stationed in Saudia Arabia during the Gulf War. And, I have a couple of friends who were stationed in MASH units during the Viet Nam conflict.

So, with this holiday weekend, as we honor our Veterans, I just wanted to say thanks to the veteran nurses as well as so many men who lost their lives and fought for my country, so I can sit on my couch sipping Diet Coke and playing on my computer today. We owe our lives and our lifestyles to these men and women.

My nursing career actually got started in the military. I was in boot camp three days after graduation from high school in 1970. Mortar man first then 91C. Challenged California state boards, got my RN...then went to real nursing school...then had to take boards again...actually did worse on some subjects second time around! Wonder why?

I retired a few years ago after 24 years in the AF flying in transport aircraft based in NJ, Japan, and AR. Participated in nearly every major US power and policy projection from 77 to 01 carrying troops and cargo. I worked hard at my job, but my hat's off to all you guys and girls I carried or supported. Your front line jobs were more difficult than mine. I also salute veterans before and after me. You all have earned it.

Hi Sekar,

I was a CRNA with the FST. Who are you anyway?

Hi Bill, as I remember you were Maj Wink and worked in the OR section of the FSE? I was SFC Moore and worked in the EMS section. Otherwise I was the Asst Cheif Wardmaster of the 5th MASH. I worked with SFC Nieves. Ringing any bells?

I was a med tech in the USAF for 4 years at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB, Tx for 4 years, then I did 3 years in the NC Air National Guard while I used my GI Bill to get my BSN.

Now I work as a staff nurse and have no ties to the military anymore.

Thanks,

Julie :)

Oh, the memories... USAF medic (medical service specialist).. Vietnam Era.

Lackland AFB 1970, on to Shephard AFB for med tech schooling... then off to work at USAF Hospital in Wiesbaden Germany.

After completion of my tour there, joined the AF Reserves for two years... in medical air evac.

Started nursing school prereqs several times after that, using my GI Bill.. along came the kids and the "rest of the story"... just FINALLY last year managed to accomplish what I started out to do so many moons ago ! :D

My husband was stationed at Weisbaden before his assignment to Lackland-where we met.

What a small world.

Kool ! When was that? (if I'm prying, disregard)

I also happened to grow up in Wiesbaden... lived there most of my life until I came to the States in '69... then joined the AF in '70 and got stationed right back home.... loved it ! :)

I think he was there from 91-92ish?

He worked at the hospital, he was sent to lackland b/c I think either the hosptal or base was closing?

I got to spend some time at Spangdalem AB with the ANG-Germany is a very beautiful country!

So, lucky you......!

oh... ok. Yes, the Hospital, and all of Lindey Air Station was turned back over to the Germans. Kinda sad... have lots of childhood memories... my Dad worked at Lindsey Air Station all the years we lived there... used to go to USAF Hospital myself as a child for annual physicals, vaccinations, etc. Then when I was a medic there, I even got to care for my Dad there as a patient when they found out he had lymphoma.... :o

Lots of memories.
