Urgent question...Need answers quick!!!

I have a choice to make.

My husband and I need money, so I went back to work as a CNA on the weekends to help make ends meet while I finish school.

1) a nursing home, here in town, paying me $9 an hour, and I work 24 hours a weekend. It's all right on 3rd shift, which I like, but 2nd shift really sucks (from 6p-10p). Not very busy after 10. Paid every two weeks.

2) a hospital, day shift, probably only 16 hours a week. Less patients, and I don't know if I like the people there. It's about a 40-45 minute drive away from home. Pay is $14.50 an hour and I would get paid every week.

What would you do?

Julie, SPN! Now, that has a true and lovely ring to it, don't you think? ;)

If I were in your shoes, I would choose the one that pays the most per hour with less hours spent making it.

The object of the game in life is to work smart and not hard! Well...not too hard anyway! ;)

Also, Julie, things aren't always as they appear to the naked eye. If you do not like the people at "choice #2", then make the money there and give them the best of your professional CNA self, and let their own personality issues blow over you. Don't get "sucked into their issues and attitudes" and you'll do just fine there. Work is not for making friends but for working as professionally straight up as you can keeping a kind business demeanor about yourself the entire working shift. Sign in with a smile, ready to work your buns off, and sign out with a smile as you wave goodbye for another day well spent. Go home to your family with a smile, embrace them, and talk about fun times, not work, during your time away from the job. :)

Since you state that your hubby and you need the money right now, make the money -- not others attitudes -- your top priority. Some people do suck "at life", sometimes life itself sucks, and sometimes you suck or will suck before you die, so there is NO ESCAPE from "sucking" on occasion. Get over that drama in life, and be the best "you" that you can be. :)

Wishing you the best in your nursing studies, and look forward to when you can officially wear LPN behind your name. :kiss

I have never over represented myself and have always been honest about my qualifications. That's why I usually post on the students board. I am proud of going to school, as I will be proud to be an LPN when I get my license. And, as I cannot change my username, I am Julielpn now, and I will be Julielpn when I am an RN also.:)

Thank you for your reply to my question. I appreciate it.

I'm sorry I did misread the salary. Sorry

I used to consider the commute as 2 hours tacked onto either end of the already long shift I'd worked.

No matter the pay....the distant place will be TEN hours/ including drive time..per day. Making that TWENTY hours a weekend. You already do 24 right?

So the hospital would be 14.50 x 16=232 / 20 making a relative salary of $11.60 per hour before expenses.

Just playing devil's advocate here.

well Julie I would weigh my options and figure out if not (poss) enjoying my job would be worth more money and less hours therefore you could spend more time studying and seeing your family it's a hard choice but the idea of going per diem at your old job that another member offered would be a good option so that you could fall back on if the new place didn't work out

good luck

Thank you every one for your excellent advice. I think I am going to do what one of my instructors suggested. Drive to the hospital, see what it's like (how people act, and so on) and call the staffing agency to determine just how long I'd be needed there, so as not to lose out on my old job for a couple week deal.

Will let you all know what's going on!

Julie:)

Ah-ha!!!!

Guess what I just found out? I called the agency to check on a few questions I had....

They cannot offer me full weekend work. It's just a fill in type thing, so I told them to put my card away until I graduate, maybe we'll see what we can do then...maybe not.

But I do wish to thank all of you again for your suggestions and wishes for me....

Hugs and love to you all!:kiss
