UPS Drivers make HOW much????

Nurses General Nursing

Published

It has been broadcast all over the news in my area that UPS is hiring, and that the average UPS driver makes around $76,000 annually! That just totally makes me feel devalued as a nurse. I am not sure what the national averages for nurse salaries are right now, but I am pretty sure it is not that much. I mean, seriously, these people deliver packages (not to devalue them, I have known a few and they work exceptionally hard), but we nurses deliver babies, we keep people alive, we take care of children and the elderly. We are highly educated, knowledgeable, and the responsibility we hold is immense. If the UPS guy screws up, someone might not get their package delivered on time. If a nurse screws up, someone could die. I just cannot reconcile this in my head!!!!

When I first saw this my initial thought was "screw nursing, I'm going to drive the brown truck!" My next thought was, how sad that we are so seriously devalued. What will it take before people realize our value to society? Am I overreacting to this? What are your thoughts?

Again, I want to add that I do not want to sound like I am putting down UPS drivers or similar careers. They work hard and do a great job. It is just that in comparison to the responsibility that we nurses hold, it does not seem that the pay is in line. Not that they deserve less, it is that we deserve at least as much or more for the work that we do!!!

Last year was the first year I broke 100k but I had to work 3 jobs for it. I worked fulltime during the week, had a part-time job over the weekend, and worked part-time in the evenings 7 days a week.

This year I have been able to secure my first single job salaried over 100k.

I live in Arizona, cost of living index is around 100. I did just buya house for $260 but it is in a really nice area.

I do hold multiple certifications, specialized, networked, and ensured that I had a wide background of experience. I did not not settle on any particular unit and was always available to travel, move, or take any shift anywhere.

Meh, I was lucky I guess.

You aren't doing anything wrong just living in a different area. If you make $100,000.00 as a nurse your house is going to cost you > $700,000.00 for a cracker box.

There are some exceptions. I work in a high RN pay / low cost of living area. One can easily make >$100K/year without working OT and a the cracker box can be had for under $200K.

The trade off is long, long, brutal winters.

How dare SOME, let me say it again, SOME (not all) of you nurses say that we UPS drivers don't deserve our pay?! The company culture at UPS is WORK. That's it. We have to bleed (literally) for every penny we earn. We have our union, and free benefits as well, and we sure as hell deserve it. Hot blazing sun? We're out there. Rush hour traffic with rain so hard you can't even see what's in front of you? We're out there. Ice on the road? We're out there. Trust me our job isn't just delivering packages, that's the least of it. It's the stress of making the conscious decisions of our deliveries, prioritizing who gets their packages first (LIKE THE HOSPITALS), delivering 30 packages per gallon of gas, minimizing left turns, dealing with all the idiot drivers which is all drivers when you're a UPSer. You screw up one little detail, you're going to hear about it from your supervisor for months. The stress we deal with is unimaginable. Yet, you can't beat the pay. I have a college degree, and stuck with UPS because I make more money than my friends and wife (who's a BSN) with degrees, benefits I pay nothing for, and job security. Last year I cleared a little over 97,000. Yes I'm not saving lives like you lovely nurses, but we deserve our money. I work hard, but I feel good about that at the end of the day, plus I'm in great shape. And to those who said we make only 16-18 an hour, I wouldn't get out of bed for that!!

It's not that you don't deserve your pay but...certainly an RN deserves at least a similar rate. It's messed up when nurses make less than McDonald's managers.

Again, let's stop the elitist comments and respect other professions. McDonalds managers, I apologize for the rude comment made here...

It isn't elitist at all. You want a low paid RN taking care of you? The big attitude is see is from you about how much better you are than nurses and how hard you work and how you deserve your pay. Nurses work just as hard putting their lives and health at risk...they deserve a reasonable salary.

There's a ladder in life...and yes I feel an RN should be paid more than retail and restaurant management among other things. If I'm an elitist for feeling that way...I am live with that.

Me? Your mistaken, I just posted here. In any event, all I'm saying is that unless you are also a McDonald manager, be conscious about how you portray them in relation to nursing. Everyone's job is equal in importance because it is all of us in society working together what makes the world go around. Nursing jobs in my opinion are no more important than a garbage collector laborer.

I'll put us pretty equal with the trash guy. I've always said they trashman I done of my best friends. The McDonald's manager...no we don't need that job. So I still believe in the ladder of importance.

I tried but I can't help it if you want to keep your elitist view. Good night ma'am.

I see nothing wrong with my view but do see a crap attitude in your first post...so differing opinions.

I can't change yours either. I'm just glad all you are doing is delivering my boxes. If you can't get out of bed for $16 an hour...maybe you should take a moment to think about all those who do have to do that including many nurses.

Here is the deal. Nursing is 90 % female .

Its' a man's world.. they are more highly regarded by society.

Men make more money.. because they are men.

Again, please read carefully, I'm not the OP, I hope you are never my nurse, if you can't read that I'm not the OP, I'm afraid you will give me the wrong medication. Perhaps you should apply at McDonalds LMAO
