Types of Nursing specialties such as Holistic Nursing?

Hello all,

I am currently taking my prerequisites for Nursing. I am starting to become less interested in "regular" nursing (in a hospital), and more interested in other specialties such as Holistic Nursing. Is anyone here a Holistic Nurse? What does this job entail, where do you work, is the salary less than a normal RN?

Also, what are other specialties that aren't so focused on just pushing meds to patients?

I say this because I know hospitals are out to make a profit, and I would like to work in a setting where I know I'm giving my patients healthy healing, as opposed to just taking meds. (Not to say meds are bad, or that Nurses who give meds are bad, but I think we can all admit that a lot of "drugs" out there are unnecessary.)

If by Holistic Nursing you mean attending to the whole person, then you might be able to work in many settings very happily. (In my opinion, this is a mindset of the nurse, rather than a specialty.) Most nursing education programs would support your interest in meeting the needs of the whole person. After graduation, you could explore some alternate healing modalities to expand your skills as a nurse.

But, if by Holistic Nursing you mean using alternative therapies in lieu of traditional medicine, I think you are looking at pursuing a different educational track than nursing.

The fundamentals of the nursing profession stand no matter what you choose to "specialize" in. You may want to consider getting a firm grasp on the basics of nursing before focusing on holistic training. Holistic nurses work in clinics and private practices and some hospitals. They learn about aromatherapy, energy medicines and accupuncture to name a few. There are many online schools offering certifications for holistic training and those nurses tend to start their own businesses. Some nurses will tell you that we all are holistic but if your are planning to take it into the levels I mentioned earlier check out the holistic nursing forum here as the previous poster stated.
