Swollen Ankles! Ouch!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am currently working as a CNA in a doctor's office. I'm not super busy but am generally on my feet all day.

By about two o'clock my ankles are swollen and somewhat painful. It only gets worse as the time goes on. I'm really nervous for when I start nursing school in the fall that the problem is only going to get worse, & more annoying.

I have good shoes, danskos, but does any one have any ideas that would help? I've heard things about ted hose, but I'm not quite sure...

THANKS!!!:heartbeat

The knee-high TED hose work for me regarding the prevention of swelling.

I know that several people I work with, including myself wear knee high compression stockings at work. I wear the ones that aren't a whole lot of pressure and you can get those pretty cheap at stores such as uniform shops and even walmart occasionally. Some of the girls I work with have to get the ones that have a lot more compression such as TED hose because they have a lot of problems with swelling. Some even wear the ones that are similar to panty hose. aI do notice a difference in how my feet and legs feel at the end of a long night when I wear my Danskos and compression stockings.

Thanks so much! Any idea where I can get them?

I purchased mine online from an http://www.Ebay.com auction.

You can also obtain them from local medical supply stores.

I often wear regular socks over the compression hose. There is no reason why you cannot do this, too. :)

When I first startted as a CNA I wore the compression stockings. I acctually got them from Target. Very comfy and made a world of difference.

I've notice though that since I've gotten my BP under control I don't have as much of a problem with swollen feet.

Are you drinking enough water during the day??Try and drink lots of water during the day... I know it can be hard to fit it in, but that will really help with the swelling too.

Also at night, if your ankles are still swollen, try and sleep with them elevated (at least above your heart level)... That will help them to be sure to be down by morning.

I like mine a little loose, but I have never worn thick socks with them to stretch them out either. Like someone else said, you can always wear socks over them, especially if you get the ones that are pretty thin.
