I just wanted to share a story and see if other nurses has something similiar to share.

I had a resident in my facility, she was born in 1898, her goal was to see the 1800's, 1900's and 2000. She wanted to see three centuries, and after that, she was ready to go. She was such a young 102! Said she lived this long because she had a beer a day. She had a son who was still living. He was 80! Anyway, this little lady broke her hip in December of 1999. The hospital phone to say that she passed away a few minutes after midnight on January of 2000. I just thought this was one of the most powerful things I have seen in my short nursing career so far. It is just amazing what the human spirit can do. I would love to read any other stories that you would like to share.

Thanks!

I had a patient in hospital who had the exact same ambition. She was hospitalized for a stroke. She actually did survive in hospital past the New Year and was sent home. I don't know if she's still going now, of course. But she was in really good shape for her age, so it's possible, although it's definitely a long shot.

Just imagine how much people who live that long have seen. The changes just from 1900 to now are just mind-boggling. My own old grandmother was born in 1897, and I remember when I was diapering my younger daughter with the disposable diaper, she observed the whole procedure. You'd expect someone that old (86 at the time) to be saying sour stuff about the changes, but she just had a lovely smile and said "We didn't have anything like that in my day. Isn't it wonderful what they come up with?"

Cool LOL

Must you be so precise about the date? Those stories were touching. No need to be so critical.

My real name is Duncan McCloud.

I was born in the highlands of Scotland, in 1452.

I am immortal.

I wonder if our perception of pain strengthens, weaken, or stay the same, as we get older.

The woman who lived into three digits really got dealt a good pair of genes! Hanging loose, I hear, is a big part of longevity. In other words, stress kills, and absolute stress kills absolutely!

All my maternal grandmother wanted to do is live to be one hundred years young! She almost made it, too! At the young age of 95, the Lord called her home to be with Him! She was my favorite grandmother, and I know she's in Heaven praying for me today! She left Earth in 1991, yet I still feel her spirit with me today! That can only mean she has a very strong spirit that can reach her loved ones even unto death! May she rest in eternal peace! I miss you Gramma Lula! :)

LOL Mario/ Duncan! I believe you! After all, you quote lyrics from tunes back in the 60's and 70's and mention TV shows from the same time period!

Seriously, I have always been amazed by how much the seniors have experienced this past century. My Aunt is 87, and she taught in a 1 room schoolhouse and had to chop wood to heat it. WWI, horses and buggies, WWII, the depression, men on the moon, etc. I just hope our generations will be as flexible as hers was/is!!! :) :)

It is amazing to me how frugal those folks who lived through the Great Depression are with their resources. Straightening out twist ties, saving used wrapping paper, etc. It's a far cry from the materialistic, ME society that has spawned the Sports Utility for the soccer moms.

   for those of us whose parents, or even ourselves(for me my parents).....grew up in depression.........

it was a different.....time.............

mom still straightens out bread ties, etc.............even if doesn't need to.........

dad says, those who say the Good old days either forgot or didn't live during it.....hehehehe

dad also says if he knew then what would be antique, would have had a garage full............

I am(for cliche'sake) a baby boomer............with a mixture of belief systems that come with, plus a micro take on it all after 40+years.............

Materialism.....is material=inanimate objects.........

---------ism=a condition of

Materialism=condition of materials!!!!!!!!! Sounds deadly.........

micro:p :p :p
