Started new job - how do I bring up time off for vacation

Hello,

I want to get your feedback:

I started a new full time position in Dec. 2010. I have a trip planned 8 days the end of Feb booked the tickets (4 of them) last Aug. I don't have any paid time off / vacation time. I am willing to take the time unpaid.

How do I approach my manager to see if he will give me the time off? OR do I not bring it up and change the vacation all together?

I am still on probation until March- I really like the unit and don't want to make waves or have my manager think I am high maintenance.

Any recommendations / suggestions?

You definitely should have mentioned the vacation before/when you accepted the job. Most require three month's notice of vacation, and only then if you have accrued enough PTO - unless it's an emergency (e.g., family death or serious illness).

During the three month orientation/probation period taking time off, even if genuinely "sick" does not indicate a good work ethic to one's superiors or colleagues. In a climate where RN jobs are scarce, rescheduling for a time when you do have enough PTO and have finished orientation seems prudent.

Reschedule....then,:D work like a horse to make up the extra expenses, then resume your normal schedule:)

No doubt the poster meant what he/she said: ''Bad work ethic. "

It's bad etiquette [sic] to put words into other posters' mouths.

Both can be used- the previous is more favorable.

I'm in this situation now. New grad with job offer but wedding and honeymoon in 4 months! I plan to tell the NM on Monday when I get the offer letter. My fiance and I talked and we both agreed ( more of me begging him) that I could post pone the honey moon if I need to. What a tough decision! However, my priority is not my honeymoon but me making a career so that my future husband and I would be financially secure.

A very Important question: I am newly RN graduate and I will have my orientation next week. Is it ok to ask my DON for a 2 weeks off ( in july) now before signing any paperworks?. I did not say anything to her during my interview because I really want this job. Any advice. Thank you.

First, I think you should start your own thread - potential responders may not see your question because the thread is old.

As was probably mentioned in previous answers to this thread, it is not at all uncommon to bring up a previously-arranged vacation when the position is offered. That truly is the optimal time to mention it. If you have not yet mentioned it but plan to prior to signing anything, I'm wondering if the trip means more than the job? If so, I would mention it to the DON before signing. If you are on the fence about the trip, then I wouldn't bring it up just before signing.
