Is it a sin to want a day off?

Sorry. I just have to vent.....I work 2 jobs. I worked my primary job the past two days, horribly busy, 14 hour shifts. I'm off today. Work the rest of the week. Yesterday AM I was asked to come in to do a C/S. at 6:00 AM today. At the time I felt like I was getting sick plus I had alot of things to do today, my only day off. So, I said no. Then when I got home last night at 9:00, I had a message asking me to work this evening because they already had a call off. I said no, I had plans for today plus I wasnt feeling well. Now I have a message on my machine stating "We're really crazy here! Could you help us out?" Why do I feel so guilty? There are 35 other nurses they can call. Obviously they don't feel guilty saying no. I feel like I don't have a good enough reason other than not feeling well, and having a million things to do. Am I wrong? Does anyone else feel the way I do?

Your time is as important as anything else in your life. It is hard to say no and just no. I always wanted to make an excuse why I couldn't help out. Just say no you don't have to give a reason why you can't work. Take care of yourself because no one else can do it for you.

How much extra do you work? I'd guess you're at the top of their list to call cause you probably go in! After you say no several times, you'll drop down a bit on the list. Everyone deserves time off without feeling guilty. You won't do yourself or your coworkers much good if you spread illness to them, and you'll end up mentally burned to a crisp.

I don't feel guilty saying no. I need a life outside of work. I make plans for my days off and won't change them. If I'm free and want overtime pay, I'll go in but only if I am free. My employer doesn't feel guilty when they cut me for low census. They don't help me pay the bills when I get half a pay check because I got cut. So why should I feel guilty about not cancelling all my plans at the last minute to go help them? Enjoy your day off and don't answer the phone.

I'm usually pretty available unless I'm working the second job. I've never called off or been late in 12 years either. It just makes me mad all the call offs we have on a regular basis (not for illness, either), and everyone else has to feel guilty for not working on their days off. (I was told "We can't find anyone else to work") Why is that MY problem?

It is not your problem unless you make it yours. They are using peer pressure and that only works if you let it. Take the time off and get done what needs to be done.

I work per diem. Today, I got 2 phone calls to come to work. I don't answer the phone ( have phone ID), let them record themselves; it's not my problem- staffing issues. We have management coordinators, who could help with patients, but instead they prefer to do their paperwork and call every nurse on their phone list. I don't feel guilty at all. Again, we have to take care of ourselves because no one else will.

Saying no is tough but you have to do it for YOU! If you are not a good YOU then you can't care for others.
