How many of you work with nurses that come in to relieve you that sit at the desk and watch you run around like a chicken with it's head cut off? I know that there are no victims-only volunteers- but we have let some get away with this behavior for so long that it is kind of difficult to stop it now....I am a big believer in karma so I try to treat others like I want to be treated When I go in to work in the am if the sky is falling I jump right in and do what I can to helpThe next shift strolls in and fools around with their purses and crap in the med room and chit chatting away....I have started standing there in the doorway and begun report-everything pertinent is written on our 24 hr census and report sheet so they can certainly read that themselves.......But we do like walking rounds at the end of each shift-we have come across stripped beds and the next shift nurses actually stood there against the wall and watched one day nurse get clean sheets and make the bed....I have also been walking to the door with my coat on and stopped an altercation between 2 confused residents while a particular 3 to 11 nurse watched.I have also grabbed residents whom are not safe to ambulate alone while those at the desk watched.Occas. we have difficulty getting off of our locked unit because as the confused residents ambulate towards the exits the doors lock-do you think someone would come and redirect so we can get the heck out of Dodge? I put in my hard 8 and am darn ready to leave ON TIME but we get attitude if we act like we have a life and somewhere to go......I know it is nothing personal-they do it to all of us...It's time to stop the insanity!!!! I vow TO NEVER sit back and be the victim of a lazy nurse again! I will nicely ask the next shift to please relieve me promptly...To join me in report promptly....to take over if an emergent situation occurs.....Just like we do every am...If someone falls out of bed at morning shift change I am certainly not going to expect the night shift to stay late to take care of it....Wish me luck-I just know some folks are going to be bent out of shape...It's funny how each shift wants to believe that THEY are the most challenged....but most nurses don't have a real clue as to what is really going on when they are not there.....
