So... I work as a PerDiem tech in an ER and a Part-time tech in an ICU. lately my ER job has been demanding that I work 3-4 days a week. I told them it is not possible because I have obligations to another facility. well they went ahead and scheduled me anyways now when i cannot make it to work because of what they did they accuse me of no call no show... it sucks and I have talked to them about this. Any advive

I don't think that this is a place that you want to be, and I would advise looking for a new job. I recently had a really bad experience and this is similar to how it began. I had signed on for full time employment, then I recieved a call asking if I wanted to work part time -including doubles and every weekend. I said I have no problem working doubles, and will work weekends- but not every weekend. Had I would have known it was going to be garbage hours or bust I would have gave in. Yet I was on the schedule from that point on every weekend.Next thing I know I scheduled to 11:15 (even though you really end up staying till 1am) then scheduled again for 6 am in the morning. They could care less that with travel time included I could only sleep 3 hours. I told them that I needed to sleep to perform safely, and soon they started to make things up (very offensive lies) and I was fired. Before that happens to you, I would advise you to leave and find a better company to work for. They are out there. When you sign on for per diem you give them the hours that you can work- it is the whole reason you signed on. Find a company that will respect you. Good luck and best wishes.

Demanding a per diem to work 3 to 4 days a week?? That is an oxymoron and contradiction! People are per diem precisely because they have other life responsibilities, and need schedule flexibility, and can't always work!! Duh!! This facility or manager sounds idiotic! With per diem, it is suppose to be your choice if and when you work! Sometimes you do have to be firm. I've been begged to work, but if I can't, I can't. I am per diem for a reason!! But it sounds like you did say no, and they scheduled you anyways. Make sure you follow protocol for your facility - like are you suppose to put availability in writing on a certain form? If so, make sure you do it!! Putting your availability in writing would also give you proof that you let them know you could not work. Review the per diem policy as well to know how much you are required to work to keep your status. Most places I worked, you only had to work one or two shifts a month. Hope you get this straightened out!

I would discuss it with the manager and HR and if the schedule can't be adjusted for someone per Diem I would quit, it sounds like they want part time and NOT per Diem.

When I was working per diem I would let the manager know what days I'd be available and she could schedule me (or not) based on needs she had those days. I was never available on weekends for scheduling but once in a great while I would pick up a weekend shift or work for someone just to help out. Sometimes, my manager would schedule me on weekends without clearing it by me first and I always refused to work those days (even if I could be available). I would email her through the company system (with a copy to me) reminding her that I had told her prior to the schedule coming out that I was not available on *whatever day/s* and that I was still not available so she would need to adjust the schedule accordingly as I would not be in to work.

I worked per diem (or I called it just prn) for several years when my kids were little. (Six kids, so "they" were little for many yrs). That way I could be off for them when I needed to be, and didn't have to fight with a schedule, request time off, etc. Most employers appreciate having someone work per diem to help fill in the gaps on their schedule. No one ever made it difficult, and if they had, like your employer is doing, I would have simply quit. But like someone suggested, keep a copy of everything you give them in writing if you choose to stay.

I am having a scheduling issue today. I am a nurse tech in med surg.

Our schedule is for approx one month. The lead tech has a blank schedule and everybody - day and night techs - mark in the shifts they will work, then she gives it to the Asst. Nurse Mgr and that is usually exactly what the schedule ends up being. The current schedule began June 8th. I worked June 8th and looked at the schedule to verify the dates that I was scheduled. Now, I do not recall if it was written in pencil or pen, thus the draft or final, but it was the first day of that schedule so it shouldv'e been the final, right?

Anyway, today I go in to work, first shift I worked since the 8th, and find out I am not on the schedule today but rather for tomorrow. Errr!!

I can do tomorrow that is fine. But I also signed up for tomorrow(saturday) night shift and now the schedules now says Sunday night shift.

If I could do it I would but I would get done at 7am and I have to be at clinical at 7am. So now I feel like a dumba**, and talk to the lead tech. She says I should be able to leave early like 6am. But that would mean that I work 12 hours then go to clinical 12 hours and that just doesn't work for me.

Now even worse I find out my ANM is on vaca so I need to talk to her manager, who tells me of course, "the schedule has been out since the 8th and this not acceptable for me to be coming to her with this now."

I don't know her well, but I did state that I am very responsible and my datebook is my bible and that I did verify my schedule on the 8th etc. but I know in my head that I really do not have much to support me since I did not make a copy of the schedule, she does not know me to know that this is not like me, and I think she's going to write me up. Sorry so long, I'm just frustrated cause I take pride in being a good employee.

I am so sorry. This sort of thing is really unacceptable. Maybe next time you need to take a picture with your phone camera (that would be a funny remark if it did not seem necessary). What is their policy regarding swapping shifts with other workers?

As for the OP it is really not OK to schedule a per diem for a time when they say they are not available. You are per diem for a reason. Someone posted that you should submit your available dates in writing and that is a GREAT idea.
