Renewal/Licensure Question

I was fired from a job in November. When I got fired my manager said they were not reporting it to the BON, and I believed that I did not have to either. I became a traveling RN and when I applied for licensure in 2 other states I told them I had never been fired, as I didn't think that I had to report it to the board. I recently read an article that says when you renew a license or get a new one you have to tell them you have been fired. I am contacting my personal which covers fighting for my license. What can happen? I didn't know I was in the wrong. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks.

I have NEVER had a renewal notice ask if I've been fired. They ask if you've done CEUs per your state's requirements, and want your check for the fee.... :) But, in the future, it's probably better to be up front about any problems- if someone screws up with references and tells a future employer you'd been fired, but you denied it, they'll believe the former employer, if nothing else than to avoid any potential problem employees- most don't care why, if you've already lied (some do)...if there's a reasonable explanation for getting the boot, many employers will at least listen.

I don't think anybody has a totally "perfect" job history (i.e.- when I got sick, my attendance was BAD.... while that's irrelevant now, I had to deal with it for years... some employers were willing to work with me- others made life hell). :)

Many states now ask if you have ever been fired, and why. Answer truthfully. They may ask for more details. I have been fired, answered truthfully, and not been denied my renewal.

Best wishes!

As of 2010, Illinois did not:)

Weird. I have never seen this question before either. Why would they want to know if you had been fired? If I were in this situation I would just look at your state's renewel application online and see what they ask before getting worried or going through all of the trouble of contacting people who probably won't know the specifics -

In Illinois you aren't asked if you'd been fired, and there is no obligation to report it

However, if you are specifically asked while applying for a job or license, you need to be truthful

just trying to understand the deal. a license application specifically asked if you've ever been fired, and you believed it was okay to lie about it? there is a big difference between not volunteering information (as in not reporting it to the board) and lying in response to a direct question.

if you were not asked directly on the application for your license if you've ever been fired, and you just chose not to volunteer that information, i don't see what the problem is. does your nurse practice act state that you must volunteer that kind of information even if not asked? if you lied, i think you know that you could find yourself in trouble if they receive information which contradicts your answer.
